The Curaçao Tourist Board could not have picked a better time to drop in and inform Canadians of what their “little island paradise” has in store for travellers. As the lingering remnants of the “super storm” Sandy continued to drizzle down across most of northeastern North America, the Curaçao Tourist Board and its travel partners hosted members of the Canadian travel media at Toronto’s Rosewater Supper Club for an informational luncheon.

The images of ivory white beaches, crystal clear blue waters, 350 days of sunshine per year, an annual rainfall of just 22 inches and the reminders that Curacao is “outside of the hurricane belt” were in particularly persuasive contrast to the grey weather outside as a parade of travel suppliers took to the podium to profess all that they loved about their destination.

Curaçao’s diversity of its population and the harmonious environment in which they live was the most oft cited attribute.

The island is home to people from 55 different nationalities and despite the mix of race, religion and creed, everyone on the island lives in harmony, the suppliers explained.

“I think it is important for you to meet us and have the opportunity to talk to us,” said Lizanne Dindial , president and CEO, Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association. “You want to know what Curaçao is really about.”

The Curaçao Tourist Board and its supplier partners arrived in Toronto this past weekend to celebrate the inaugural WestJet flight to the destination. The year-round weekly direct flight is expected to create more interest in the destination from Canadian travellers.

“I know you Canadians want direct flights. Well we have that now, right from Toronto to Curaçao,” said Dindial.

In addition to the weekly WestJet flights, which depart on Sundays, Air Canada also offers seasonal direct flights to Curaçao.

The destination is best known for its scuba diving, as it offers more than 60 dive sites, many of which are considered among the top diving spots on earth. That being said, Curaçao has something for all travellers whether they par take in the diving or not, says  Lindsey Norris, public relations executive, Hill + Knowlton Strategies.

“We’re so much more," said Norris. "The capital city of Willemstad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you’ll see why when you stroll down the streets of Willemstad taking in the brightly coloured Dutch colonial buildings... There’s a lot of rich history and a lot of rich culture to explore. And, of course, there is no shortage of activities. We do have something truly for everyone. It’s the perfect destination for families, for couples, for honeymooners and the GLBT community alike. Everyone is welcome in Curaçao.”

In addition to the celebration of the inaugural WestJet flight and the media luncheon, the Curaçao Tourist Board and its supplier partners met with travel agents in Toronto and Oakville on Monday and Tuesday to educate them on how to best sell the destination to Canadian travellers.

“Let clients know that it’s a little less American and a little more European,” advised André Rojer, marketing manager, North America, Curaçao Tourist Board.

Rojer also told TRAVELHotNews.com that the Curaçao Tourist Board has some big announcements and unveilings planned for early 2013 that are expected to change the way public, and the people of Curaçao, see the destination.
