Intrepid Travel has announced that James Thornton, currently the company’s commercial director and general manager, sales & product, has been promoted to the role of managing director, effective Dec. 1, 2012.
Thornton has been with Intrepid for more than seven years, initially joining the company as sales & marketing coordinator in 2005. He held a number of roles within sales and marketing before being appointed to lead the Global Sales function in 2010. Over the last 18 months, he has undertaken a dual role as Intrepid’s regional director for UK & Europe and its general manager for global sales, and recently became commercial director with responsibility for global product and global sales.
During his time at Intrepid, Thornton has been actively involved in the acquisitions and integration of businesses in Africa, North America and Australia; he has established high-performing regional sales offices in Canada and Central Europe; and he has led the development of a sales culture at Intrepid, resulting in 2012 recording the best sales growth at Intrepid in six years.
Geoff Manchester, who co-founded Intrepid Travel alongside Darrell Wade 23 years ago, recently decided to hand over the role of managing director so that he can concentrate on the areas of the business that he is most passionate about, including responsible travel.

Throughout Intrepid’s history, its co-founders have rotated leadership of the business, with Manchester taking on the role of Managing Director for the last two years while Intrepid transitioned to the PEAK Adventure Travel Group. He will continue to play an integral role within Intrepid, leading The Intrepid Foundation, acting as an ambassador for Intrepid at industry, business and promotional events and taking on other activities within his remit as a PEAK Director.
Darrell Wade, Intrepid co-founder and CEO of the PEAK Adventure Travel Group said the company is delighted to have appointed James Thornton as a strong successor from within the business, and are confident that he will lead the Intrepid Group to new heights.
