It was beauty, butterflies and breathtaking 3D effects when 155 travel media, tour operators, travel agents and VIPs gathered last night at Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre for a screening reception to celebrate Flight of the Butterflies.
The film chronicles Dr. Fred Urquhart’s 40 year search to find the secret hideaway of the monarch butterflies, which he discovered in a secluded location in Mexico, proving the most incredible migration on Earth.
Following the year-long annual migration cycle of the butterflies, the award-winning production team filmed hundreds of millions of monarchs in their remote overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico in 2011 and again in 2012 and also along their migratory routes from Canada, across the U.S. and into Mexico.
The technology of IMAX immerses audiences in the remarkable migration experience as two generations of the butterflies migrate north, and then a super generation miraculously finds its way from Canada to a few isolated mountaintops in Mexico – to a place these butterflies have never been and yet congregate every winter. Flight of the Butterflies stars Canada’s Gordon Pinsent.
“The journey of the monarch butterfly is representative of the close economic cultural and social relationship shared by Mexico, Canada and the United States,” said Rodolfo Lopez-Negrete Coppel, COO, Mexican Tourist Board.

“This project provides a unique platform for a comprehensive environmental and marketing campaign and a positive international image of Mexico at a critical time for the tourism history of our country,” he added.
It is this positive reinforcement of all Mexico has to offer that makes Rodrigo Esponda, director, Mexico Tourism Board in Canada, confident the increase in tourism numbers he’s seen this year will only lead to bigger and better advances.
“The numbers have been very good,” said Esponda. “Last year we had almost 1.6 million Canadians visiting Mexico. This year we are up again.”
Esponda is excited by the possibilities offered as Flight of the Butterflies showcases the beauty and lush scenery that draws not only butterflies, but travelers, from around the world.
“Mexico offers every wonder in the world in one place,” said Esponda. “We have 37 Unesco World Heritage sites, more than any other country in America. Some are natural, some cultural, some historical.”
However, Esponda says the best asset Mexico has is its people.
“We have a 2000 year, continuous culture that has been preserved. The same people who built the sites you’re going to see in Mexico are still there. They speak the same language and have the same traditions.”
Esponda says Canadian tourists should keep in mind that this is a very important year for the Mayan culture. Locations around Mexico have celebrations planned throughout the year, especially for December. Esponda and his team are also confident this new film may bring those around the world seeking beauty and butterflies to Mexico as well.
Flight of the Butterflies premiered in Ottawa Oct. 3rd and will be in IMAX theatres in August 2013.
