Viking River Cruises is expanding beyond Europe’s in-land waterways with the creation of Viking Ocean Cruises.
Last week, the newly-established sister company to Viking River Cruises signed a memorandum of agreement for the construction of two new, luxury ocean cruise ships with Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri, with an option for the building of a third vessel.
The new ships will make the cruise line the newest player in the luxury ocean cruise sector.
The ocean ships will be 47,000 gross tonnes and will host 944 passengers in 472 cabins. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in early 2015, the second one in early 2016.
Fincantieri and Viking are also discussing further joint projects, not only in the ocean cruise segment but also in the river cruise segment.
