JAZZ INCOME TRUST GROUNDED
Air Canada parent ACE Aviation has put plans to spin out the airline's discount-fare subsidiary Jazz Air into an income trust on hold, citing "prevailing market conditions." ACE Aviation Holdings Inc. said today it has completed preparations and still intends to turn Air Canada Jazz into a trust, but will wait until the time is right. "Given current conditions in the income trust market, ACE management feels it appropriate to refrain from making this filing at this time," the company said in a release. "As prevailing market conditions warrant, ACE will proceed with a Jazz offering." Finance Minister Ralph Goodale cast a chill over the income trust market, particularly new spinoffs, in mid-September when he moved to halt advance tax rulings on income trust offerings - a measure taken to signal that it is seriously considering reducing tax advantages of the vehicle.

Yoshiro Tagaguchi
until Yoshiro Tagaguchi, Japan's Deputy Director Travel, Promotion Division, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, took the podium to spell out details of the Visit Japan strategy.  Tagaguchi said that the Visit Japan Campaign (VJC) was specifically designed to increase inbound travel to a targeted 10 million visitors per year by 2010. Canada was selected as one of 12 focused markets because the number of Canadian visitors is already significant (Canada ranks 9th out of all countries); Canadians are keen foreign travellers; Canadians have a positive perception of Japan; air-lift capacity is already extensive; and in a sample survey, 7.9 per cent of Canadian adults (2 million people) expressed an interest in visiting Japan. Currently the bulk of Canadian visitors come from Ontario, B.C. and Quebec and research indictes that the best prospects are among younger travellers - below age 54.
