Hotel franchiser Cendant to buy travel company Orbitz for US$1.25 billion
Hotel franchiser Cendant Corp. said Wednesday it has agreed to buy online travel company Orbitz Inc. for $27.50 a share in cash, or about $1.25 billion US. The deal represents a premium of 32 per cent to Orbitz's Tuesday closing price of $20.77.

UN downplays fear of human spread of deadly avian flu despite latest Thai death
The World Health Organization downplayed fears Tuesday over the spread of avian flu from one human to another, suggesting an apparent case in Thailand was likely a ``dead-end'' transmission that scientists have seen before. Air Canada confirms deal to buy 45 aircraft from Brazil's Embraer

Scheduled to fly out of bankruptcy-court shelter on Thursday, Air Canada has signed a firm deal to buy 45 Brazilian Embraer 190 aircraft, each configured to seat 93 passengers. Embraer said the order is valued at $1.35 billion US, with the potential value surpassing $2.7 billion if all options are exercised.

Norfolk agrees to explore Dover-Erie ferry
Norfolk County has taken the next step in exploring the development of a passenger ferry service between Port Dover, Ontario, and Erie, Pennsylvania. On September 28, Norfolk County Council agreed unanimously to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Erie-Western Pennsylvania Port Authority which will further develop the business case and the agreements necessary for the eventual operation of the proposed fast ferry service between the two Lake Erie ports.

World travel in 2003 was safest on record

Global aviation enjoyed its safest year on record in 2003, just two years after terrorism shook passenger confidence, says the international agency that governs civil aviation. "The number of accidents involving fatalities on the world's scheduled operations was the lowest since 1945," Assad Kotaite, president of the International Civil Aviation Organization, said. "Even with the quantum leap in the number of flights and passengers over six decades, aviation safety in 2003 was safer than when ICAO was created."

Delta announces details of benefit and wage cuts; pilots OK retirement pact

A powerful tropical storm soaked southern Japan, disrupting train and plane services, knocking out power to homes and prompting authorities to warn of heavy rain, high waves and strong gusts. The storm, which had been downgraded from typhoon status, had sustained winds of up to 108 kilometres an hour when it struck Kyushu, the southernmost main island.

Best Western Names David Kong New President and CEO
The Board of Directors of Best Western International has appointed David Kong as the hotel chain's new president and chief executive officer. Kong previously held the position of executive vice-president of International Operations and has been serving as acting president and CEO since mid-August. Kong, who joined Best Western in 2001, is a hospitality veteran with more than 35 years of experience and has held senior management positions at Hyatt, KPMG Consulting, and Omni International.

Swedish airport workers say they'll go on strike in October over salaries
Sweden's transport workers union said that as many as 2,500 of its members will go on strike Oct. 11 in response to proposed changes in salaries and working hours at SAS AB. The union and the travel conglomerate, which operates Scandinavian Airlines, have disagreed about a new deal that would tighten the number of hours for ground staff, including mechanics, technicians, ramp workers and luggage handlers. "I'm surprised, to put it mildly. We have offered exactly what the union asked for, that is a 7.3 per cent raise over three years," employers' spokesman Jonas Bernunger said.
