Fairmont reports Q3 profit of $131.8M US, helped by hotel sales
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Inc. hopes to take advantage of its recent deal to take over management of the London's legendary Savoy Hotel as a springboard to expand in Europe, the hotel and resort company said Wednesday. ``Not only will the Savoy provide us with the opportunity to extend out distinctive collection of properties in a critically strategic market – London – it will also provide us with an ideal platform for further expansion in Europe,'' said Tom Storey, Fairmont's executive vice-president of development. ``It positions the Fairmont brand for further international growth.'' Fairmont signed a deal in September to manage the 263-room Savoy beginning in January – the company's first hotel in Europe. Currently, Fairmont's only hotel outside its core North American market is in the United Arab Emirates. Storey said the Savoy Hotel's owners have allocated $48 million to restore the hotel that first opened its doors in 1889.

IATA: World air travel continues steady recovery from 2003 dip
Global air passenger traffic continued a steady rise in the first nine months of this year, rising 17.7 per cent from the same period in 2003, the International Air Transport Association said Wednesday. Cargo traffic was up 14.1 percent, the Geneva-based federation said. ``People are travelling again,'' said IATA chief Giovanni Bisignani. ``Every region is reporting double-digit growth. Traffic clearly is rebounding from 2003, which was an exceptionally bad year.'' The airline industry was hit hard last year by a sluggish economy, rising fuel prices and travel fears related to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and the conflict in Iraq. But high oil prices mean that increased traffic is failing to boost airline profits, warned IATA, which groups more than 270 airlines, covering 95 per cent of global air travel. ``The sad story is that, despite these improvements, the bottom line is worsening with the extraordinary price of fuel,'' Bisignani said. ``If current fuel price levels persist, losses may well exceed the $3 billion to $4 billion previously forecast for 2004.''
