CANADIANS TRAVELLING AT HOME
Canadians travelling at home accounted for all the gain in tourism spending in the second quarter of this year. And, says Statistics Canada, tourism spending was at its highest level ever and fully 13 per cent above the second quarter of 2003 when the SARS outbreak occurred. With international travellers, particularly those from the United States, decreasing their visits, domestic expenditure was the sole reason for tourism growth in the first six months of the year. But early indicators for July, August and September are mixed. The agency says the effects of hurricane Katrina, particularly on fuel prices, will likely dampen travel by private vehicles.
