Delta Airlines flight makes safe emergency landing in Fredericton
A Delta Airlines flight made an emergency landing at Fredericton airport early Friday after the aircraft had problems with its flaps. Officials said the flight from Boston radioed in around 2 a.m. to say it was having mechanical problems. Firefighters from the airport, Oromocto, N.B., and Fredericton were standing by with ambulances and police. The plane, with at least 18 passengers on board, landed safely.

Air Canada Jazz Boosts Regional Jet Flying Across Canada
Consistent with Air Canada's previously announced restructuring plan and in order to achieve its profitability targets, Air Canada Jazz is boosting regional jet service to communities across Canada beginning with its summer 2005 schedule. With the addition of 15 Bombardier CRJ-705 aircraft commencing in May 2005, the regional carrier will grow to include 65 Canadian-built Bombardier regional jets. Alberta plans to boost tourism by reducing hotel room tax slightly

Tourism spending is about to jump in Alberta under a bill that will cut the provincial hotel room tax slightly and dedicate the remainder to attracting visitors. Government house leader Dave Hancock said Thursday the Tourism Levy Act is one of about 40 bills Ralph Klein's Conservative government plans to introduce during the spring session of the legislature.

Canada's travel deficit jumped to its highest level in 11 years last year

Canada's travel deficit, the difference between what Canadians spend travelling abroad and what foreign travellers spend in Canada, jumped to its highest level in 11 years last year. The deficit soared to $4.1 billion, the first time since 1994 that it has topped $4 billion, Statistics Canada said Thursday. Canadians spent a record $20.7 billion outside the country, up 11.3 per cent compared with 2003 and the largest gain since 1990.

US Airways to shrink fleet by four per cent; blames industry overcapacity

US Airways will return 11 of its Boeing 737 aircraft to lessors – about four per cent of its current fleet of 281 mainline jets – blaming industry overcapacity and the overall weak revenue environment. The airline also said recent changes to its route network that have made US Airways more efficient also made the jets expendable.

Four Seasons Hotels' Q4 profit jumps 33% to $15.6M, full year hits $33.2M
Four Seasons Hotels Inc. shares fell more than seven per cent Friday as fourth-quarter profit at the Canadian-based luxury hotel chain came in well under analysts' forecasts, even as a travel-industry rebound helped the company post a 517 per cent rise in annual earnings. Earlier, the chain reported fourth-quarter profits of 41 cents a diluted share that was far below an analyst consensus forecast of 61 cents, according to Thomson One Analytics. Fourth-quarter profit rose 33 per cent to $15.6 million, compared with $11.7 million or 32 cents per share a year earlier.

Nevada Gaming Commission Approves MGM MIRAGE and Mandalay Resort Group Merger
MGM MIRAGE announced that the Nevada Gaming Commission unanimously approved the proposed merger between MGM MIRAGE and Mandalay Resort Group yesterday. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and satisfaction of regulatory requirements in Illinois and Michigan. MGM MIRAGE anticipates the transaction will be completed in the first quarter of 2005. "We are very pleased with the Commission's unanimous approval and we are working diligently to complete the remaining steps of the merger prior to the end of March," said Terry Lanni, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MGM MIRAGE.
