| FLash | Canadian Embassy in Sri Lanka tests suspicious powder; may reopen Friday The Canadian Embassy in Sri Lanka may reopen on Friday after a suspicious white powder found in a passport and feared to be anthrax is tested. A Buddhist monk with powder on his passport sparked a security scare at the Canadian High Commission on Monday, prompting authorities to close the building and evacuate staff. Sri Lankan police said later the powder was used to protect the passport from insects, and that it wasn't anthrax. However, the embassy wasn't taking any chances. |

| CITC training on international fare construction on hold until amendments are passed by airlines |
|
Travel agencies may be aware that IATA is proposing several changes to the way in which international fare construction is handled. An example is the proposed elimination of international sales indicator codes (SITI / SOTO / SOTI / SITO). Once passed these changes may take effect as early as January 15, 2005. Coralie Belman, CITC's National Certification Manager, has noted that "At the moment any training on this topic would be premature. I have confirmed with IATA that several of the airlines have not as yet agreed to a specific course of action as it relates to the proposed amendments to fare construction rules. Until they do CITC does not want to offer training on an amendment that may in fact be rejected. "

| AP |
Communist Cuba said ``adios'' to the Yankee dollar that shored up its struggling economy for a decade, launching a two-week process Tuesday to eliminate the U.S. currency from its stores and businesses in response to stepped-up American sanctions. President Fidel Castro said widespread use of the currency of his country's No. 1 enemy, once seen as a necessary evil to stay afloat after losing Soviet aid and trade, would be halted to guarantee Cuba's economic independence.

| FLash | Theme parks find another way to make visitors scream at Halloween John Taylor is a ringmaster of sorts, directing an assortment of ghouls and sideshow freaks in the shadows of Cedar Point amusement park's roller coasters. It's opening night at the park's annual Halloweekends event, and the monsters are milling about in search of jagged teeth and wrinkly ears. Some are getting too restless, interrupting Taylor as he dabs black paint on the face of Mike Vatan, aka Lord of the Monsters. ``The monsters haven't learned monster etiquette yet,'' Taylor says with a sigh and a chuckle. Soon the ``Screamsters'' will stake out their places in the haunted houses and fog-filled paths throughout Cedar Point, waiting to frighten anyone who comes along. ``To see them scream makes it all worth it. There's no better raw emotion than fear,'' said Vatan, an imposing 6-foot-5 figure with skulls hanging from his belt and horns jutting from the top of his head. |

| FLash | Pilot error blamed for November 2001 crash in New York City that killed 265 The co-pilot of American Airlines Flight 587 caused the November 2001 crash in New York City that claimed the lives of 265 people, the staff of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday. NTSB investigator Robert Benzon said the co-pilot's response to turbulence, just seconds after the Airbus A300-600 plane took off from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, was ``unnecessary and aggressive.'' Benzon also said that investigators found that American Airlines improperly trained its pilots to use the aircraft's rudder while recovering from upsets and said the problem could have been exacerbated by the airline's simulator training. Benzon also said that the rudder control system on the aircraft is sensitive at higher air speeds, which is potentially hazardous. |
