| Riviera Maya | Confusion reigns over the state of Mexico's Riviera Maya tourist region in the wake of devastating Hurricane Wilma. While foreign news agencies real off a litany of horrors for stranded tourists and hotel property management struggle to obtain realistic damage assessments, a statement from the Riviera Maya Tourist Board is sounding a note of optimism. Associated Press reports that "the heart of Mexico's $11 billion US foreign tourism industry" has been wiped out - Cancun's legendary white beaches washed away; the airport terminal badly damaged; 60,000 of the 70,000 hotel rooms in Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel and other resorts along the Yucatan's eastern coast, rendered useless and the docks on Cozumel severely damaged.

CUBA AFTER WILMA Floodwaters from hurricane Wilma that transformed the coastal streets of Cuba's capital into rivers began receding Tuesday, leaving behind damage to historic buildings and the famed Malecon seawall. The coastal highway paralleling the Malecon was dotted with chunks of the seawall, as well as huge holes where the road had been chewed up by pressure from the ocean. The windows of Havana's seaside hotels were smashed. |
