| FLash | Low cost Italian airline Volare Group declares insolvency, layoffs loom Italian low-cost airline Volare Group has declared itself insolvent, paving the way for bankruptcy protection and the appointment of an extraordinary commissioner among efforts to save the company. Volare announced the decision after a board meeting held late Monday in Milan, company press officer Federica Menichino said. The declaration of insolvency should allow the Italian government to press ahead with plans for the appointment of an extraordinary commissioner at the group – a move used recently in attempts to salvage scandal-struck dairy giant Parmalat SpA. Labour Minister Roberto Maroni said in an interview with newspaper La Repubblica on Tuesday that the new commissioner for Volare would be named by the end of the week. ``We will intervene with every means to guarantee the security of 2,000 jobs,'' Maroni was quoted as saying. The company has also asked for a month of state-sponsored support for workers who might be laid off, Menichino said. Volare's workers have reportedly not been paid for months. |
