AP
A state appeals court upheld a $500,000 US award to a flight attendant who blamed second-hand smoke on airliners for her bronchitis and sinus disease in a decision Wednesday that could clear the way for damage trials on up to 3,000 similar claims. The ruling for former TWA attendant Lynn French was a test case interpreting a $349 million settlement reached in 1997 between the tobacco industry and nonsmoking attendants. Rates are being frozen on Marine Atlantic ferries for two years, the Crown-owned company said Wednesday. The freeze on rates on the service between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland will be in effect from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2006. The federal government said keeping rates at the current level will ensure continued affordability of services to both private and commercial users. An advisory committee struck to examine the future of Marine Atlantic will try to identify long-term strategies for stabilizing the company's ferry operations. The committee will hold consultations with stakeholders in January and is expected to provide Ottawa with a final report by the end of March.
