| FLash | Transport Workers Union raps American Airlines over job, salary cuts One of American Airlines' big unions says the carrier has broken a promise that management would share the pain of job and salary cuts equally with rank-and-file workers. A consultant hired by the Transport Workers Union found that union jobs were cut by 18.1 per cent from December 2002 to April of this year, compared with 12.7 per cent for managers who work with mechanics and other TWU members. The consultant also said American Airlines data showed that mechanics had their pay cut 15 per cent while managers who supervised them suffered an average pay cut of 5.5 per cent in a restructuring last year. Company executives credited the restructuring with saving the airline from bankruptcy. |

| FLash | American Airlines to delay purchase of 54 Boeing aircraft for US$2.7B American Airlines, struggling to make money despite high fuel prices and fierce competition, is delaying the delivery of 54 jetliners from The Boeing Co. between 2006 and 2010. The move lets American delay $2.7 billion US in spending through 2010, more than half of which was expected to occur in 2005-2007. American said it would delay taking 47 Boeing 737-800 jets by 7 years and 7 Boeing 777 aircraft by 6 years. Instead, American said it would add only 777s in 2006, including one originally scheduled for delivery in 2007, to help expand international flights. Chief financial officer James Beer said the delay would improve the airline's ability to restructure its finances. American is a unit of Fort Worth-based AMR Corp. Boeing said it has already factored the delayed orders into its financial guidance. |

| FLash | At airports like Detroit's, it's getting easier to eat healthy For many who travel for the holidays, the eating begins at the airport. It's always been easy to find high-calorie, fat-filled and fried food. But at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and a growing number of airports nationwide, more options for the health-conscious are on the menu. It was a pilot's complaint that helped launch the improvement in Detroit. Now ``Heart Smart'' options marked with a red logo are on many menus – and a recent survey shows the airport continues to make strides in healthy offerings. ``When I'm at an airport, the last thing I want is a cheeseburger,'' said Anthony Struzziero, who grabbed a chicken breast sandwich during a recent layover. He decided to eat at Mediterranean Grill after spotting healthy options on its menu. |

| FLash | Bankruptcy judge grants United Airlines more time to negotiate with unions A bankruptcy judge gave United Airlines, America's second largest carrier, more time Friday to negotiate with its unions on more labour concessions. ``We have a real need for cost reductions, the need is urgent,'' said Jake Brace, chief financial officer. United contends it needs an additional $725 million US in labour cuts and to drop traditional pensions to secure financing and get out of bankruptcy. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Eugene Wedoff gave United until Jan. 31 before it loses exclusivity, which allows United alone to file a reorganization plan without risk of a rival plan submitted by outside investors. |
