| FLash | Alaska voters will be asked to approve tax on cruise ships An initiative to tax cruise ships $50 a passenger and pay state income taxes has been certified for the next Alaska state-wide election. Lt.-Gov. Loren Leman certified the 23,286 signatures required to put the measure on the ballot Friday. The measure will be decided by voters in the August 2006 election, unless a special election is held earlier. The initiative would have the state charge the tax on cruise ships with more than 250 berths. Some of the revenue would be given to Alaska port cities where the big boats stop. The cruise industry would also have to pay state corporate income taxes, like other businesses do. The state would also tax gambling on the ships while at sea. |

TIA forecasts travel spending in the U.S. to increase 6.9 per cent in 2004, while the Air Transport Association predicts a five per cent increase in air passengers. |
