| Patrick Samson |
Contrary to what was vehiculed in some medias, including the Globe and Mail, WestJet is not about to set foot in the tour operators' market. In its September 16 edition, the daily paper says that WestJet wants to developp an in-house, complete vacation-package concept. "The name WestJet Vacation has been registred a long time ago, in case the company decides to expand its activities in the vacation industry", says Louis Gosselin, Sales Director for the Quebec and Ottawa regions. | BORN FREE PARK REBORN - NEW LODGES PLANNED |
|
Kenya's Meru National Park, where Born Free conservationists George and Joy Adamson began their work with orphaned lions, is showing such strong signs of recovery after decades of poaching obliterated its rhino and elephant populations and scared away most other animals, that plans are now under way to build new lodges. Tourist numbers dropped to 6,000 last year from a peak of 40,000 a year in the 1970s. Poachers and bandits operated with impunity throughout Kenya in the 1980s, taking rhino horn and elephant tusks to be turned into folk medicines and high-priced ornaments and jewellery. However, a change in government policy in 1989 saw the formation of the Kenya Wildlife Service and poaching has subsided, helped by a global ban on the ivory trade that has seen prices drop.
