Taiwan opens world's 5th longest road tunnel after more than decade in making
Taiwan on Thursday celebrated the opening of what officials called the world's fifth-longest road tunnel. The 12.9-kilometre Hsueh Mountain tunnel was part of the newly built 55-kilometre Taipei-Ilan Expressway, which runs through mountains and river valleys in northeastern Taiwan. The Ministry of Transportation claimed that the tunnel was the longest in Southeast Asia, but it's debatable whether Taiwan belongs to the region.


Air Canada offers more choice, more savings and executive class upgrades for frequent fliers
Air Canada today announced that it is expanding its 'Latitude Pass for the West' discount commuter air pass to cover 17 non-stop routes across western Canada. This follows the successful launch of the pass on the popular Vancouver-Calgary and Vancouver-Edmonton routes earlier this spring. Effective September 17, 2004, Air Canada's Latitude Pass for the West will offer frequent fliers across western Canada more destinations and greater savings with complete travel planning flexibility. Moreover, Air Canada is enhancing service on the key Vancouver-Calgary, and Vancouver-Edmonton routes to offer Executive Class on all flights. Latitude Pass holders benefit from complimentary upgrades that can now be requested online the day prior or day of departure for even greater convenience.

Delta Air Lines bondholders cheered by exchange offer, bonds rise sharp

Delta Air Lines Inc.'s bonds rose sharply in Thursday trading, a day after it offered to exchange some bonds in an attempt to stave off bankruptcy. Late Wednesday, the third-largest U.S. carrier said it would issue up to $680 million US in senior secured notes in exchange for $2.2 billion of unsecured debt and $471 million of equipment trust certificates. Unsecured bondholders would get 35 to 40 cents on the U.S. dollar while certificate holders would get 75 cents on the dollar. Near midday Thursday, Delta's 10.375 per cent debt due 2011 was quoted five points higher at a midpoint price of 32, or 32 cents on the dollar. Delta's 7.7 per cent debt due 2005 was quoted up 4.5 points at 49.50. The new notes will be secured by collateral including some debt-free aircraft, flight simulators and flight training equipment.

Assessments begin in Northwest Florida areas affected by hurricane Ivan
The eye of Hurricane Ivan made landfall just west of Gulf Shores, Alabama at 3:00am ET Thursday, Sept. 16. Extreme Northwest Florida experienced heavy flooding and wind damage. Assessments have begun. Currently, evacuation orders are still in effect for all of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Bay and Washington counties and for the coastal areas of Gulf, Walton and Franklin counties, all in Northwest Florida. Interstate I-10 is closed east and west across Escambia Bay in Florida. Many county and state roads in Northwest Florida are closed due to downed trees and flooding.

Jeanne, the season's 6th hurricane, hits eastern tip of Dominican Republic

Jeanne strengthened from a tropical storm into the sixth hurricane of the season and struck the evacuated eastern tip of the Dominican Republic on Thursday, a day after lashing Puerto Rico with damaging winds and rain that knocked out power, flooded roads and killed two people. A hurricane warning was posted for the eastern and northern coasts of the Dominican Republic, as forecasters told the storm-weary Caribbean to monitor the progress of Jeanne, which had 130 kilometres-an-hour winds with higher gusts.

Hurricane Ivan blasts Alabama, spinning off killer tornadoes, floodwaters
Hurricane Ivan slammed ashore early Thursday with winds of 210 kilometres per hour, packing deadly tornadoes and a powerful punch of waves and rain that threatened to swamp communities from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. At least 12 deaths were blamed on the storm. Many of the millions of Gulf Coast residents who spent a frightening night in shelters and boarded-up homes were emerging Thursday morning to find that Ivan was not the catastrophe they had feared.

Stock in bankrupt US Airways Group Inc. will be formally removed from the Nasdaq Stock Exchange on Sept. 22, the company said. Until then, the stock will remain on the exchange with the ticker symbol UAIRQ. US Airways shares dropped 26 per cent, or 28 cents, to 80 cents US a share in trading Wednesday. The seventh largest U.S. airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday, its second filing in the last two years.
