Los Angeles airport security increased to guard against missiles
Counterterrorism officials are beefing up security at Los Angeles International Airport to protect jetliners from terrorists armed with shoulder-launched missiles. There is no immediate threat to aircraft, according to authorities, who said they were prompted to step up security because of recent overseas strikes against airliners, coupled with the availability of such weapons on the black market.

WestJet files $30 million lawsuit against Air Canada and three top executives
CP
WestJet Airlines filed a $30-million lawsuit Wednesday against Air Canada and three top executives, including chief executive Robert Milton, alleging the airline has abused the court system with its lawsuit over accusations of corporate espionage. The Calgary-based discount airline accused Air Canada of using ``illegal means to interfere with WestJet's business.'' ``Competition is one thing, but the use of litigation as a stalking horse to advance other avenues of attack, for the purpose of eliminating a competitor is another,'' WestJet said in a statement of claim filed in Ontario Superior Court. ``The Air Canada action is brought for no other purpose than the destruction of WestJet as a competitor.''

2003 was a gloomy year for the Canadian tourism industry, says StatsCan
CP
The year 2003 was one of the worst for the Canadian tourism industry, says Statistics Canada. Campgrounds, outfitters, cottages and bed and breakfasts suffered a decline in operating revenues in part because of hurricanes in the Atlantic region, summer heat waves in Central Canada and forest fires in the North. ``Ontario was faced with a power outage in August 2003 and hotels and motels in Toronto were hard hit due to SARS,'' the agency said Wednesday. ``Forest fires throughout the summer in British Columbia hurt tourism.''

U.S. regulators to allow high speed wireless web access on commercial jetliners
American regulators voted Wednesday to give airline passengers high-speed Internet connections while they fly. The unanimous vote by the Federal Communications Commission means air travellers could be surfing the web by 2006 on flights in the United States. The FCC also voted to solicit comments from the public about ending the ban on in-flight use of cell phones. Among the issues to consider are whether passengers want to be surrounded by cell phone conversations. ``The ability to communicate is a vital one, but good cell phone etiquette is also essential,'' Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said.
