The airline said Wednesday its lawyers have advised that the request for a review sent to the U.S. Department of Transportation “is without merit.'' “It is not expected to have any effect on Air Canada Cargo's ability to provide all-cargo service between Canada and the United States,” the airline said.

| FLash | Cargo plane with seven crew crashes near Halifax amid huge fireball The tail section of a loaded cargo jet snapped off before it crashed into woods at the end of a runway at Halifax International Airport early Thursday, killing all seven crew members on board. “Our thoughts and our prayers go to the families of those killed in this tragedy,” said Pat Chapman, a spokesman for the airport authority. The tail of the Boeing 747, owned by MK Airlines Ltd. of Britain, lay in a field at the end of the runway, inside the fence surrounding the airport property. “The aircraft basically didn't take off,” said Steve Anderson, an airline spokesman in Sussex, England. “She continued her (takeoff run) and ran off the runway and ran into woods.” |

| FLash | Southwest Airlines reports 12% jump in profits, higher revenue Southwest Airlines reported a 12 per cent jump in third-quarter profits Thursday as its decision to buy fuel in advance helped insulate the low-cost carrier from rising fuel prices. Southwest said Thursday it earned $119 million US, or 15 cents a share, in the July-September quarter, up from $106 million, or 13 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had forecast 12 cents per share in earnings. Revenue was $1.67 billion, up nearly eight per cent from $1.55 billion a year earlier – but a bit below the $1.69 billion forecast by analysts. Southwest was the first major carrier to report third-quarter results. Southwest had hedged – or made advance purchases at fixed prices – for most of its jet fuel purchases, which helped offset rising fuel prices. |

| FLash | Sask town keen, but skeptical on prospects of space launch from its airport A representative from a team of Canadian engineers trying to send a privately funded rocket ship into space was in Saskatchewan to set up logistics for a launch that he hopes will happen within the next month. But David Grossman, a member of the Toronto-based Da Vinci project, was doing a lot more than coming up with contingency plans and meeting with emergency staff. He was meeting with townspeople and visiting schools who were geared up for the launch 2 weeks ago only to have their hopes dashed by a cancellation at the last minute. Grossman wasn't making any apologies for the delay but he did lay out, in detail, the Da Vinci team's plans for its project in the near future. “A lot of people were inconvenienced by the delay, not only in Kindersley, but people in Toronto and, in fact, people all over the world,” Grossman told reporters after the meeting. “We've had some setbacks, but we've had some successes. The bottom line is we are not going to launch because there is a piece of paper that says we are going to launch. We are going to launch when all the safety issues have been addressed and when we have a high probability of success.” |
