BAHAMAS TOURISM TARGETS CANADA
Bryen Dunn
Paul Strachan
New appointments within the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, announced at a recent Toronto press conference, signal a more aggressive marketing effort for Canada. Ms. Vernice Walkine has been named Director General of Tourism. Ellison “Tommy” Thompson returns to Nassau as Deputy Director General of Tourism, and Paul Strachan is relocating to the Bahamas Tourist Office in Toronto as Director Canada, filling a position that has been unoccupied for the past six years. The new team will shift its focus toward niche markets such as incentives, groups, and adventure tourism in a bid to capture more of the Canadian inbound market. Ten years ago inbound traffic was around 120,000 arrivals annually. In 2004, this number had fallen to approximately 67,000, which has prompted an aggressive approach to reverse the downward spiral.

Barbara Dirnberger
Malaysia Airlines Barbara Dirnberger got a warm sendoff from the travel trade and press at a farewell party hosted by the Toronto staff last night at To Go. Dirnberger, who has headed the Malaysia Airlines office here since 1990, has recently been appointed country manager, Thailand. As of October 1 she will take up her post in Bankok, overseeing a staff of 61 with responsibility for operations at the Bangkok and Phuket airports. Speaking of her promotion and impending move, Dirnberger said she was “overwhelmed – no other words,” adding, “I’ve been in denial for seven weeks” but she’s ready and looking forward to the major move both professionally and personally. Dirnberger promises to maintain strong ties with the Canadian partners she has worked with over the years. “I will help any tour operator or travel writer,” she said, citing as an example that she has already “been asked to identify hotels that appeal to Canadians. Helping out, but not because it’s business.”
