Tropical storm Matthew causes flooding across southeast Louisiana
Tropical storm Matthew, the 13th named storm of the 2004 hurricane season, moved ashore into southern Louisiana on Sunday, causing scattered flooding as the area was drenched with heavy rain. Elsewhere, the 14th named storm, a subtropical system named Nicole, blew gusty wind across Bermuda. Along the Gulf of Mexico coast, a tropical storm warning was in effect Sunday from the Alabama-Florida state line westward to Intracoastal City, La., the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in Miami.


Signature Increases Price Match Ceiling
Signature advises agents that it has increased its price match ceiling from $100 to $150 per passenger including taxes, effective immediately. The national policy, valid for all travel completed by April 30 of next year, applies to all Signature and Sunflight product except Las Vegas, Antigua and Barbados packages featuring BWIA, and domestic or Florida air only.

Bishins, who attended the Atlanta meeting along with other GDS, airline, and travel agency personnel, is concerned that new IATA fare construction and ticketing rules, intended to simplify and liberalize the sale of international tickets via the Internet and through various e-commerce initiatives, lack the clarity and specificity to assure that any advantages which accrue to airline-issued transactions also accrue to travel agency-issued tickets.

Canadian ports are “sieves” says Transport Minister Jean Lapierre

Transport Minister Jean Lapierre described Canada's ports Friday as “sieves,” adding the federal government must take measures to tighten security on the waterfront. “It's clear that Canadian ports cannot remain sieves,” he said during a speech to the Quebec Federation of Chambers of Commerce. “We have to tighten the screw.” Asked later to clarify his comments, the minister said he was only quoting from a 2002 Senate report that criticized port security.

Bombardier signs contract with Air New Zealand for 17 Q300 turboprops

Bombardier Aerospace has announced a multimillion-dollar contract with Air New Zealand for 17 Bombardier Q300 50-seat turboprop aircraft. The firm orders are valued at approximately $269.5 million US, which could increase to $716 million if all options are exercised, Bombardier said in a release Sunday. The contract also includes options on an additional 10 Q300 and 13 Bombardier Q400 70-seat aircraft. Deliveries will begin in 2005.

Mobile prepares for the cruise crowds

This Alabama port city is getting ready for a big influx of visitors as the new homeport for a 726-cabin cruise ship, Carnival's Holiday. The Holiday's sold-out inaugural trip from Mobile is a five-day cruise to Cozumel and the Western Caribbean departing Oct. 16. It marks Mobile's first venture into the big-time cruise business, and it's a challenge the local hospitality industry is ready to meet. Mobile Area Convention and Visitors Bureau president Leon Maisel said the cruise ship will transform Mobile from a "pass-through" destination to a "go-to" city.

Powerful typhoon pummels Japan's Pacific coast
The most powerful typhoon to barrel into Japan's Pacific coastline in a decade made landfall on Saturday, unleashing heavy wind and rain that grounded planes, flooded homes and set off mudslides. One person was dead and another one missing. The storm is dubbed “Ma-on,” which means horse saddle in Cantonese, and is the record eighth typhoon to reach Japan's shores this year. On October 8, Meteorological Agency officials said the brunt of the typhoon – which had sustained winds of 160 km/h – was stronger than any other to hit the eastern coast in 10 years.

Subtropical storm Nicole brings steady rain, gales to Bermuda
A subtropical storm named Nicole brought strong wind gusts, steady rain and scattered power outages to Bermuda on Sunday. Nantucket and Cape Cod in Massachusetts, and the coasts of Maine, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia could feel Nicole's outer effects by the middle of the week, meteorologists said. Bermuda, a British territory in the mid-Atlantic, was under a gale warning and a tropical storm watch Sunday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
