Cathay suspends 4 Boeing 777 300 jets after engine part falls in flight
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. has suspended 4 of its 10 Boeing 777-300 jets after an engine part fell off one of them and smashed onto a car as the plane flew over Thailand last week. The Dec. 1 incident, in which a section of an engine duct plummeted to the ground, forcing Flight CX751 bound for Mumbai to turn back to the Thai capital, Bangkok. There were no casualties, but the falling debris destroyed the windshield and roof of a Nissan parked near Bangkok's international airport. At a news briefing, Cathay said it has since checked all of its 10 Boeing B777-300s and found problems with engine ducts in 4 of them.

Jetsgo launches major Western Canada expansion

Jetsgo today announced details of its full Western Canada expansion program that extends its discount service to four new cities, moves two cities from seasonal service to year-round, and adds 46 new city pairs to its schedule. New service rolls out Jan. 10, making Jetsgo the only discount airline serving all 10 Canadian provinces. "The new Jetsgo cities are Prince George, Kelowna, Fort McMurray and Saskatoon," said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of Jetsgo. "Victoria and Abbotsford will now receive year-round service and, in addition, we've created a significant number of new connections and options through Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg.

Transat A.T. Inc., which owns 100% of air carrier Air Transat A.T. Inc., advises that, as of the close of market on Monday, December 6, 2004, based on the statements filed representing approximately 99.99% of its outstanding common shares, the non-Canadian ownership level of Transat common shares was approximately 23.57%. This represents a net decrease of 481,080 common shares or a 1.39% decrease in non-Canadian ownership of Transat's common shares since our last press release dated December 3, 2004.

Air Canada Reports Eighth Consecutive Month of Record Load Factor in November
Air Canada reported a system load factor of 74.6 per cent in November 2004, the highest ever for November. The mainline carrier flew 3.9 per cent more revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in November 2004 than in November 2003, according to preliminary traffic figures. Overall, capacity decreased by 3.6 per cent, resulting in a load factor of 74.6 per cent, compared to 69.2 per cent in November 2003; an increase of 5.4 percentage points. In the domestic market, capacity decreased by 8.5 per cent while traffic increased 2.6 per cent resulting in a domestic load factor of 76.7 per cent - an 8.3 percentage point increase year over year.

Recovery on track for tourism industry
Toronto's tourism industry has recovered from the devastating blows of 2003, as indicated by hotel occupancy and employment figures released today. The industry's economic renewal strategy is now focused on restoring tourism in Toronto to pre-2001 levels. Jim Bradley, Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation, and Bruce MacMillan, President and CEO of Tourism Toronto, joined Greater Toronto Hotel Association (GTHA) President Rod Seiling in providing a status update on the recovery program. "Efforts to revitalize Ontario's tourism industry are clearly working," Bradley said. "We still have a long way to go, but it is encouraging to see the progress being made in this crucial economic sector."

U.S. set to start fingerprinting foreign visitors at Canadian border
Border guards in International Falls, Minn., and other busy northern crossings will start fingerprinting foreign visitors by the end of the year as the Department of Homeland Security clamps down on the Canadian border. Technology including motion-detecting sensors and land- and air-based surveillance of deserted stretches will also improve security, Asa Hutchinson, undersecretary for border and transportation security, said at a conference of law enforcement officials from eight Midwestern and western states and Canada. Most Canadians won't be subjected to the scans because they don't need a visa to enter the U.S.
