Northwest pilots approve 15% pay cut
Northwest Airlines pilots overwhelmingly approved a new contract that gives them a 15% annual pay cut for the next 2 years and allows the company's regional affiliates to carry more passengers. The agreement would let Northwest Airlines Corp. increase revenue by adding new regional jets and increase the number of seats in existing small jets. Of the 4,129 pilots who voted, 89% favoured the agreement and 11% were opposed, the pilots' union announced.

Glenn Grenier, whose Toronto firm is leading a court-approved lawsuit following the hard landing in the Azores, says at least 90 of the 293 passengers have accepted the deal. Passport passes muster for passport applications
In a shocking display of bureaucratic common sense, Canada's Passport Office has decided it will accept Canadian passports as identification in applications for new passports. ``As of Nov. 1, 2004, a previously issued Canadian passport that is either still valid or submitted up to one year after its expiry date will be accepted as supporting identification,'' the office proclaimed on Nov. 2. It still insists on an original provincial birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship as essential proof of Canadian citizenship. Applicants must also submit supporting identification, which until now typically meant a driver's licence or Old Age Security card. Henceforth, a passport will also be accepted. ``The Passport Office is committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Canadian passport, while providing efficient and timely services to its clients,'' stated Doreen Steidle, recently appointed chief executive officer of the office. ``The addition of a previous passport as acceptable supporting documentation will ease the application process for many Canadians.''

Air Canada passenger traffic in October up 7.7 per cent from year earlier
Air Canada reported higher traffic and more efficient aircraft loads in October, the airline's first month since emerging from bankruptcy protection. The carrier said Thursday it flew 7.7 per cent more revenue passenger miles in October than the same month in 2003, a combination of passengers times miles flown. While capacity increased by 1.5 per cent _ a measure of available seats and miles flown _ the airline's aircraft were on average 77.7 per cent full, its best ever load factor for a month of October. A year ago it was 73.2 per cent. Load factors are one measure of an airline's efficiency. In the domestic market, capacity decreased by 8.3 per cent while traffic increased 1.7 per cent resulting in a domestic load factor of 80.1 per cent. The Montreal airline said the decrease in North American capacity reflected the elimination of the last of its Boeing 737 fleet, and redeployment of some aircraft to the Latin America market.
