CITC fall 2004 exam date is now closed
Counsellors looking to register for the next certification exam should be aware that the registration process for October 30, 2004 is now closed. The next exam scheduled is for May 7, 2005 with a registration deadline of March 18, 2005. Counsellor can begin preparing to write the 2005 exams by purchasing prep guides or previous exam copies as a practice exam.

Alitalia signs agreement with government, unions, on layoffs plan
Italian carrier Alitalia signed an agreement Wednesday with the government and labour unions over layoffs at the airline, the final hurdle in long negotiations for ensuring the company's immediate survival. Following news of the deal, Alitalia shares opened up 5.6 per cent on the Milan stock market.


Air Canada reports record September load factor of 79%; WestJet 71%

Air Canada says it carried more passengers per flight in September than in any other September in its history. The load factor, which was 79.2 per cent compared with 73.4 per cent in September 2003, is a key measure of an airline's efficiency. The company, which emerged from bankruptcy protection last week, said Wednesday it was the sixth consecutive month of record load factors, as a result of passenger traffic growing faster than the number of seats and flights the airline makes available.

Alberta study finds Edmonton Calgary high speed rail link feasible

Rapid population and economic growth in Alberta over the last 10 years has made a high-speed rail link between Edmonton and Calgary feasible, says a new study by a transportation group. ``The corridor now has the critical mass to support a high-speed rail system,'' Art Smith, chairman of the Van Horne Institute which conducted the study, said in a news release Tuesday. The study says the rail line could be established in two ways: by using the existing Canadian Pacific Railway freight corridor (at an estimated cost of $1.7 billion), or by building a new corridor, possibly along Highway 2 (at a cost of $3.4 billion).

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. signs agreement to obtain motor-coach transportation services from Alaska independent coach company
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. today announced that it has signed an agreement that calls for the Alaska Independent Coach Company, LLC, to provide motor-coach transportation for shore excursions in Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway, Alaska. Alaska Independent Coach Company will begin providing motor-coach transportation for the 2005 Alaskan summer season for both Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. Alaska Independent Coach Company's president is Tom Tougas, a 30-year tourism industry veteran, who owns several tour companies across the state.

SN Brussels Airlines and Branson's Virgin Express sign merger deal
SN Brussels Airlines and Richard Branson's Virgin Express Holdings have signed an agreement to create a single airline based in Brussels. The deal announced Wednesday marks another small step toward consolidating Europe's fragmented airline industry, after Air France and Dutch KLM joined forces earlier this year. Like the Franco-Dutch tie-up, SN and Virgin will form a joint holding company. SN will receive a majority 70.1 per cent stake and Virgin the remaining 29.9 per cent.

United Airlines announces domestic service cuts and fleet reduction
United Airlines plans to slash the number of its domestic flights and increase its more profitable international schedule, while reducing the size of its fleet. United's parent, UAL Corp., said Wednesday that by March 2005 it will increase the number of international flights by 14 per cent and reduce its domestic flight schedule by 12 per cent, shifting some of them to United Express. ``Fundamental changes in our industry, including ongoing high fuel costs, intense pricing pressure and continuing overcapacity, demand that we take aggressive steps now in implementing this plan to ensure that United remains competitive,'' Glenn Tilton, UAL's chairman-CEO said in a release.
