Spain's Iberia airline announces up to 2,500 job cuts over three years
Spain's largest airline, Iberia, said Friday it will shed up to 2,500 land-based jobs over the next three years and is in discussions with union representatives on cutting cabin crew jobs. The carrier said the cuts will help reduce its costs, which have been under pressure from higher crude oil prices and strong competition from low-budget carriers. An Iberia official said the air carrier has signed an agreement with the union to reduce the workforce on land by 2,000 to 2,500 employees, confirming a report in the Spanish newspaper ABC. That would be more than 13 per cent of the 18,539 people Iberia employed at the end of 2003 in land-based jobs such as mechanics, ticket-sellers and baggage handlers.
