US Airways pilots union meets to discuss proposal to cut pay and benefit
The union representing US Airways pilots met to discuss the airline's proposal to slash pay and benefits for pilots, a day after salary and job cuts were announced for the airline's management. Leaders of the Air Line Pilots Association said US Airways' decision to slash $45 million US a year in pay and benefits to roughly 3,700 management employee was welcome news, but does not mean an agreement with pilots is a done deal. Union leaders met with advisers to decide whether to allow the approximately 2,500 union pilots to vote on a 5-year contract that would save the bankrupt airline $300 million annually.

Lufthansa passenger plane diverted to Cyprus after airline receives bomb threat
A Lufthansa passenger plane en route to Tel Aviv was diverted to Cyprus on October 2nd, escorted by Israeli war planes, after the airline received a bomb threat, officials said. Stella Urumi, a Lufthansa spokeswoman in Cyprus, said all 331 passengers and 16 crew members got off the plane in Larnaca so it could be searched, along with everybody aboard and their luggage. Urumi said the plane was expected to proceed to Tel Aviv by evening, and that Lufthansa's managers in Germany “do not think this is a serious call.” The threat was received in a phone call to the airline's Frankfurt office. The Israeli spokesman for Lufthansa, Yitzhak Zaroni, said the caller spoke with an Arabic accent. “When the plane was in the air, there was a telephone call in Germany that said there was an explosive device on the plane,” Zaroni told Israel TV's Channel 10. After consulting with Israeli authorities, the airline diverted the Boeing 747 to Larnaca instead of letting it continue to Tel Aviv. Urumi said the pilots' request to land in Tel Aviv had been rejected and Larnaca was the nearest available airport.

Union Strike at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco
As of Friday, Oct. 1st, the 14 multi-national Local 2 hotel employee union (which includes Grand Hyatt San Francisco and Hyatt Regency San Francisco) went on strike. This is expected to last a minimum of two weeks, but it could last longer. Helping hands from other Hyatts from all over the country are at work, so the hotel is running and operates normally. Guests may hear some noise outside the hotel, Hyatt team tells us, but other than that, everything is fine.
