Charles Lapointe, président-directeur général of Tourisme Montréal and President of the Canadian Tourism Commission, was appointed to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Council yesterday at the organization's 16th General Assembly. Lapointe will represent Canada during his two-year term on the council.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) cancellation of three March sailings of the Norwegian Star to Mexico, due to damaged forward thrust bearings on the ship, is causing trouble for families planning 2006 March Break getaways. "The bad news," said Zohny, "is the March 9th, 2006 sailing is B.C. school break and NCL is not offering any help to families booked on that sailing."

ITALY LEAPFROGS DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ON CANADIAN DESTINATION LIST
Q2 stats show 48.9% year-to-year increase in Canadian visits

Italy has jumped past the Dominican Republic to move into 5th place on the list of favourite foreign countries for Canadian travellers. The Italian Government Tourist Board has reported that travel by Canadians to Italy in the second quarter of 2005 shows a record increase. The data is part of a preliminary statement issued by Statistics Canada on November 28.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANIC SHELF FALLS, EXPOSES LAVA STREAM
A massive section of volcanic shelf has collapsed at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, bringing down a section of sea cliff and sending molten rock and boulders into the air. The collapse into the ocean Monday exposed an 18-metre cliff and a 1.8-metre diameter stream of lava shooting from the cliff face 13.5 metres above the water. The glowing lava has since formed a ramp of new land as it continues to pour out into the ocean, sending up a tower of steam. The collapse of solidified lava and sea cliff is the largest since Kilauea Volcano began its current eruption in 1983.

CARIBBEAN SUN EXPANDS ROUTES INTO DOMINICA
The island of Dominica will receive an early Yuletide gift this year when Caribbean Sun Airlines begins daily flights to this destination on Dec. 15. The flight will depart from San Juan, Puerto Rico, fly directly to Dominica then continue on to Barbados. Reverse flights begin Dec. 16.
POPOCATEPETL ERUPTS IN MEXICO CITY
The Popocatepetl Volcano sent a gritty cloud billowing into the sky outside Mexico City early Thursday. Officials warned nearby residents to protect themselves against the rain of ash the eruption will likely cause. The 5,450-metre volcano, which has been erupting intermittently since 1994, posed no other immediate danger, they said.
