He advocated a competitive, market-driven approach to policy at the Insight Information Company’s 17th annual Canadian Airline Investment Conference. This may include a relaxation of some restrictions that have long been abandoned in other industries.

The new Minister of Transport, Jean Lapierre, hopes to guide the airline industry into an market-driven and liberalized air policy, however he will have to move forward without the majority government clout of previous Ministers. Addressing an audience of airline lawyers and financiers at Insight Information Company’s 17th Annual Canadian Airline Investment Conference, the Minister made clear that while he intends to pursue an activist agenda in air transportation, the realities of the Liberal minority government call for a much more consensus-driven approach: “I believe our best opportunity for success will come only if we synchronize our agendas and, together, work hard at creating a broad understanding of our issues and why change is needed.”

WestJet will offer four non-stop flights each week between Toronto and Tampa, with connecting service available from other WestJet destinations in Canada. Don Bell, WestJet's Senior Vice President, Customer Service, said today, “We are very excited to launch non-stop service to a total of eight destinations in the United States, including Tampa. Sunday’s commencement of regular flights between Toronto and Tampa will be another great milestone for WestJet.
