MEXICO'S OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Mexico Tourism Board releases official statement to questions regarding Northern Mexico Warning
According to the Mexico Tourism Board, "Mexico remains a safe tourist destination and this is reflected in the 22.6 million international visitors that arrived in 2008, of which, 1,144,650 were Canadians. This number represents a 20 per cent increase from the previous year. Tourists who suffered any incidents were minimal." The tourist board goes on to say, "Mexico is the tenth most visited tourist destination in the world and is a very large country with many safe destinations to visit and enjoy. The violence associated with drug trafficking is isolated in cities that are far away from tourism destinations. We suggest using common precautions as when travelling to any foreign country." MSC ITINERARY CHANGES
MSC Cruises announces itinerary changes for MSC Rhapsody to ensure passenger security
In light of recent developments concerning possible acts of piracy against ships transiting the Somali coast and the Gulf of Aden, MSC Cruises is altering MSC Rhapsody's itinerary from Durban (South Africa) to Genoa (Italy), in order to ensure total security and peace of mind for our guests and crew. The cruise line is following the recommendations of the Maritime Security Centre for the Horn of Africa, a coordination center run by the EU Naval Force to safeguard shipping in the region. MSC Rhapsody will no longer call at the Egyptian ports of Safaga and Sokhna, but will instead stop at Sharm El Sheik. The new route is an estimated 500 miles longer than the previous itinerary, taking a wider course past Kenya and sailing east of Sumatra. [Full text and pictures]
