AEROMEXICO COMES TO TORONTO
AeroMexico inaugurates first Canadian service in Toronto

Based on the 90 passengers arriving in Toronto and an additional 60 leaving for Mexico City, yesterday's inaugural Toronto flight with AeroMexico appeared to be a success. To further the days festivities, AeroMexico, along with the Mexico Tourist Board hosted an intimate cocktail party at Toronto's Archeo Exclusive where they presented the attendees with a new Mexico campaign designed specifically for the Canadian market. The new daily, non-stop service to Mexico City from Toronto came at a time that was right for Canada, Ruberman Aldana, Regional Sales Director Central USA & Canada, told TRAVELHotNews. The Canadian Automobile Association announces closure of seven retail stores in Southern Ontario

The Canadian Automobile Association said that it will close seven of its retail stores in southern Ontario, putting 120 people out of work. The move will affect 70 staff members at the retail level and another 50 employees at the company's head office in Thornhill. Company officials say while the tumbling economy played a role in their decision, so too did a change in how people are making their travel plans. "The traditional travel customer is starting to move to a more 21st-century model," said Jason Ballantyne, Communications Manager for CAA South Central Ontario. [Full text and pictures]

Air Canada Vacations' European lineup has doubled and now includes close to 200 hotels in nine cities including London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Dublin, Frankfurt, Munich, Geneva and Zurich. To celebrate this expansion, Air Canada Vacations is offering an early booking bonus. Together they will run a series of targeted sales calls and trade training workshops to key retail travel agencies and consortia looking to promote Ireland in 2009. BERLIN HITS 2008 HIGH
Berlin announces record visitor numbers in 2008 despite economic downturn
In spite of a strong Euro and the international economic downturn, Berlin closed its 2008 tourism year with record visitor numbers. In 2008, a total of 7.9 million guests checked into Berlin's hotels: a 4.2 per cent increase over 2007. Staying for an average of 2.2 days, visitors spent a total of 17.78 million overnights (a 2.8 per cent increase) in the city's hotels and guest houses. Visitor numbers have been increasing steadily for the past five years. Canadian visitor numbers to Berlin continued to rise by double digits as well. In 2008, 37,650 Canadians, an increase of 21.8 per cent, spent a total of 95,347 overnights, an increase of 19.2 in the German capital. [Full text and pictures]

WESTJET EXPECTS ECONOMIC PINCH

WestJet Airlines Ltd. has announced that passenger traffic and load factor improved in February 2009, but it expects the weak economy will have an impact on its first-quarter. Sean Durfy, WestJet president and CEO, said in a statement that the "pricing environment has not improved" and WestJet expects to see a 10 to 12 per cent decline in revenue per available seat mile in the first quarter.
