A NEW CEO FOR AIR CANADA
Calin Rovinescu named president, CEO of Air Canada; surprise resignation from former head Montie Brewer
Calin Rovinescu
The Globe and Mail has reported that Air Canada has appointed Calin Rovinescu as the new president and CEO of the airline to help weather it through a tough year. Montie Brewer, who was appointed president and CEO in 2004, has resigned. Canada’s national airline is low on cash, and some industry analysts are predicting Air Canada could be forced to file for bankruptcy protection for the second time in six years. Rovinescu will inherit various challenges, including rising debts and pension deficits, less demand for travel, labour contracts that will expire and serious competition in the form of WestJet Airlines. The airline industry is a familiar one for Rovinescu, who helped restructure Air Canada six years ago.  [Full text and pictures]

MORE BORDER GUARDS AT 6 AIRPORTS
Canadian Press
Ottawa will spend $10.5 million to add more border service guards at six airports across the country, Public Safety Minister Peter Van Loan said Monday. Van Loan said the funding will translate into 16 additional hours of customs service at certain airports, paid for by the government. The move will make airports more competitive and keep the border safer, Van Loan said. The Toronto City Centre Airport, Deer Lake Regional Airport in Newfoundland and Labrador, and Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport will all receive funding. Regina International Airport also falls under the new plan, along with two airports that have not yet been named.
MEASLES ALERT IN WESTERN EUROPE
Canadian Press
The Public Health Agency of Canada is warning travellers of measles outbreaks currently in several western European countries, including France, Switzerland, Germany, the U.K. and Ireland. Measles is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable deaths in children worldwide. Canadians may be protected against measles if they were born before 1970. Adults born since then should ensure they have received two doses of the vaccine. For detailed vaccine recommendations for adults and children, go to this link (and then click on Travel Health, then Advisories & International reports).
