In an effort to highlight Austria's westernmost province, the Austria Tourist Board, along with the Lech Zürs and Vorarlberg Tourist Boards hosted an intimate luncheon at Toronto's Canoe Restaurant yesterday. Fresh from Quebec City, Gerhard Walter, Director, Lech Zürs Tourist Board and Michael Gigl, Director North America, Austrian Tourist Office, were available to discuss the lesser-known western region of Alberg and what sets it apart from Austria's widely travelled capital of Vienna. Fumihiro Sampei, Executive Director, Japan National Tourism Organization, to departs at end of March
Fumihiro Sampei's term has come to an end in Toronto. The former Executive Director of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has said his farewells to the Canadian industry. After he departs at the end of March, Sampei will be taking on a new assignment back in Japan. His successor will be Hisao Hara, who is currently serving as the senior specialist for the General Affairs Department at the JNTO's Tokyo office. Of his time in Toronto, Sampei said, "It has been a great experience for me to live and work in Canada for more than four years and surrounded by many friendly people.  I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to you for the many courtesies and kind cooperation extended to me during my tenure at the Toronto Office of JNTO."

TRAVELHotNews.com sat down yesterday afternoon in Toronto with Intrepid Travel's Robyn Nixon, international general manager of sales and marketing, to discuss the company's first year in the Canadian market and how Intrepid is faring in 2009. This year marks the adventure tour operator's 20th anniversary in September. Nixon, fresh from the ITB Berlin tradeshow, says the Canadian store, based in Toronto, experienced a "fantastic first year. We're really happy with the decision to make [Canada] our home." Despite the global recession, Nixon said Intrepid is not feeling the pinch and is "looking forward to business as usual.we are not a 'shrinking violet'" in tough times, she said. Kenya to halve prices for tourist visas by 50 per cent as of Apr. 1, 2009; Goway says now is the time to visit

Goway's AFRICAExperts advises agents that Kenya will reduce the cost of tourist visas by 50 percent beginning April 1, 2009. Also, in recognition of growth in family travel, visa fees will be waived for children under 16 years of age. The company says now is the time to send your clients to Kenya. "This announcement eases costs for travellers," said Moira Smith, General Manager Goway's AFRICAExperts, 'A family of four would currently pay $200 in visa costs. With the revised pricing structure, from April 1, this is reduced to $50." TAIWAN CRUISES INTO THE FUTURE
Taiwan wants to be the next frontier of the growing Asia cruise market, with 450,000 cruise passengers expected for 2009
Asia is poised to become the next growth opportunity for the cruise industry and Taiwan plans to be one of the reasons, said Michael Chang, director of the Taiwan Visitors Association. Speaking at Seatrade in Miami, Chang said that Taiwan is experiencing record-high numbers of cruise visitors as more cruise lines continue to add Taiwan to their Asian itineraries. "Asia is what Europe was to cruising 20 years ago - a new discovery - and we all know what has happened there. As they expand their operations globally, Taiwan is getting strong interest from major cruise lines, particularly as relations with China continue to improve. We are taking every opportunity to promote our port facilities and unique attractions to the world's cruise vacationers," Chang said. [Full text and pictures]

AF INTRODUCES PREMIUM VOYAGEUR CABIN
Air France will introduce a new private cabin on long-haul flights beginning in fall 2009. It is located between the Business and Economy cabins and the new cabin is called Premium Voyageur. Available to book on Apr. 1, 2009, the first available destinations will be New York JFK, Tokyo and Osaka. It includes 40 per cent more space than economy, a seat pitch of 97 cm and a 123-degree seat back recline.
