Out of 19 nominees, most of them based in Eastern and Central Canada, Nakhleh was voted the Personality of the Year for the TRAVELHotNews.com Awards of Merit 2008 for Canada. When asked about his surprise win for Personality of the Year, Nakhleh says, “I guess I got lucky. If you’re in the business for a long time and you treat people the right way…travel agents know me in Western Canada.”

| NCL APPOINTS MARTINOLI |

| Roberto Martinoli | | Norwegian Cruise Line appoints Roberto Martinoli as President and Chief Operating Officer Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) announced yesterday that cruise industry veteran Roberto Martinoli has been appointed president and chief operating officer. In this senior leadership role, he is responsible for all aspects of fleet operations, including the construction of NCL’s largest Freestyle Cruising vessel, Norwegian Epic. Martinoli will report to Kevin Sheehan, NCL’s chief executive officer, who maintains responsibility for all other areas of NCL’s business. Prior to his appointment Martinoli was working in Europe as advisor to Apollo Management, a private equity company that is also one of NCL’s shareholders. Martinoli has more than 30 years experience in the shipping and cruise business.

Air France has launched af.biz, a new version of its trade website dedicated to travel agents. The interactive communication is designed to help agents be there for their clientele 24/7. Af.biz, which will replace airfrance.biz, offers immediate access information on each market. The home page will offer immediate access to the latest commercial and operational data from Air France, as well as a direct link to favourite marked pages. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau appoints two sales reps in Montreal and Toronto
Just after launching the “Miami Loves Canada” promotion with Air Canada Vacations, Alio Tours, Holiday House, Royal Scenic Tours and Sunwing Tours around Valentine’s Day of this year, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) announced that it will add two new sales representatives in Toronto and Montreal. Joanne Scalamogna will be based out of Toronto and Anna Bailet in Montreal. Scalamonga has owned her own travel marketing and consulting firm, Access Marketing, since 1996. Bailet has been involved in the tourism industry for more than two decades, owning her own travel agency in Montreal for the past 10 years that specializes in incentive and group travel.

The Great Canadian Travel Company releases Canada 2009 brochure The Great Canadian Travel Company is offering a range of travel opportunities in their upcoming Canada 2009 brochure. The new catalogue includes four-day/3three-night city breaks in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal through to the company’s longest program, a 14-ay/13-night program in the Yukon and Alaska. There are self-drive programs in Manitoba, British Columbia, the Alberta Rockies and Quebec over to the Maritimes. Guided tours include horse-back riding on the Mackenzie Trail in B.C., a stay at a dude ranch in the foothills of Alberta, a coach tour of the Yukon and Alaska and a Great River Journey up the Yukon River from Whitehorse, by boat and float plane.

Canada’s dollar closes at lowest level since September 2004; March Beak spending down south to be impacted Canadian Press
The Canadian dollar has dropped to its lowest level since September 2004. A March break holiday in the U.S. sunbelt is getting more expensive for Canadians as the loonie continues its downward slide. On Monday, the Canadian dollar closed at its lowest level in nearly five years after the economy was hit with more bad news, this time in the housing sector. The loonie fell to close at 76.98 cents U.S., down 0.45 of a cent on Monday, its lowest level since September 2004. The dollar traded down as much as 1.20 cents earlier in the day to as low as 76.53 cents US.

Icelandair is offering 15 per cent commission on select Icelandair packages booked through March 2009. Travel agents can also receive special pricing on a build-your-own package to Iceland. Agents should note that Icelandair is also offering an Agent Special. From either Halifax or Toronto, travel agents and a spouse or companion are now able to fly Icelandair and stay in Iceland at a promotional rate. The package includes round-trip airfare, two to four nights hotel, FlyBus hotel/airport transfers, breakfast daily except day of arrival, as well as fuel surcharges and other fees.
