UNITED REPORTS TRAFFIC IN DEC 2008
United Airlines today reported its preliminary mainline traffic results for December 2008. The company reported a December mainline passenger load factor of 79.9 per cent.  Total scheduled mainline revenue passenger miles (RPMs) decreased in December by 11.5 per cent on a capacity decrease of 12.7 per cent in scheduled mainline available seat miles (ASMs) compared with the same period in 2007.

ARTA Canada launches Travel Agent Forum for online travel agent discussions
ARTA Canada announced today that it has acquired the rights to manage and operate Canada's online travel agent discussion tool, the Travel Agent Forum. Begun five years ago as an independent vehicle for Canadian agents to post questions, seek guidance, offer recommendations or simply vent about the retail travel industry, the Travel Agent Forum became a mainstay of much-needed communication among agencies.  The Forum is divided into three discussion areas: The industry, the agent and the client. Caribbean Airlines appoints new director of marketing and corporate communications, Laura Asbjornsen

Caribbean Airlines has announced the appointment of Laura Asbjornsen as Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications. Asbjornsen joins Caribbean Airlines with extensive experience in communications, journalism and public affairs. A national of Trinidad and Tobago, Asbjornsen returns to the country having spent the last eight years in Brussels as an industrial lobbyist and policy advisor. Her most recent position was at the European Roundtable of Industrialists (ERT) as working group manager where she developed industrial advocacy strategies, and advised senior industry executives of major European companies on issues in the areas of Business Competitiveness, Energy and Climate Change, Competition Policy and Societal Changes. At Caribbean Airlines, Asbjornsen will be responsible for the company’s advertising, marketing, corporate communications, customer relations and loyalty programs. She will begin her role at Caribbean Airlines effective January 5, 2009. [Full text and pictures]

Silversea has announced that its newest ultra-luxury ship, Silver Spirit, is set to debut with a Grand Inaugural Voyage on January 21, 2010. On this 91-day journey, named "The Spirit of South America," Silver Spirit will sail from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles and twist back to New York on an itinerary highlighted by a visit to Rio de Janeiro in time for Carnival, a journey around the end of the earth at Cape Horn, an in-depth exploration of the Mexican Riviera, a crossing of the Panama Canal and a Statue of Liberty event in New York Harbor. Silversea will begin accepting reservations on January 12, 2009. The Caribbean Tourism Organization will be launching various online programs in 2009 to assist North American travel agents who sell holidays to the Caribbean. A new social networking community and the creation of an electronic library and resource centre are among several exciting features which will be launching as of Jan. 1, 2009. The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is to launch a series on online programs, aimed at improving its North American Chapter system and the way travel agents do business. ISRAEL GOES HIGHER
More Canadian visitors to Israel than ever before – 65,000 visited from Jan. to Nov. 2008, a 21% increase

Israel has achieved another set of record-breaking visitation numbers for 2008, with 65,000 Canadians recorded visiting from January to November that year. That represented an increase of 21 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. Overall, more than 3 million international visitors came to Israel in 2008 – the highest number of any year since the independent State of Israel was founded in 1948. "This is the first time ever [that] more than 3 million tourists came to Israel in a single year," said Oded Grofman, Consul for Tourism, Director Israel Government Tourist Office - Canada, "and this underscores Israel's attractiveness to travelers of all nationalities, faiths, ethnic backgrounds and interests. Close to three-quarters of a million North Americans visited Israel in 2008 - also a record," added Grofman.
