CUBA ENDS BAN ON PRIVATE TAXIS

Cuban officials say they are ending a nearly decade-long ban on new licences for private taxis - and they will even let cabbies set their own fares. The rules published in the official gazette also will allow private jitneys in rural areas, though they will be under greater restrictions than city taxis.

ZOOM TO FLY AGAIN?
Zoom Airlines could return this summer under a new owner

The Globe and Mail has reported that Zoom Airlines could once again fly the skies from Canada to Europe this summer. The airline shut down on Aug. 28, 2008, stranding about 4,500 travellers and leaving 40,000 customers with useless tickets. The prospective owner, James Hultquist-Morrissey, the owner and chairman of Globe Span Capital, says low fuel prices are to Zoom Airlines’ advantage, should he choose to resurrect the airline.  “I'm the first guy to admit that there is some ill will there, but the brand name is worth bringing back,” he said. The new business model entered Canada in June of last year, offering a home-based model for agents looking to start their own businesses. Sinclair said that Travel Counsellors Canada has reached its target of 20 Canadian Travel Counsellors as of year’s end 2008, and is especially pleased that there are now Travel Counsellors from coast to coast, as far west as Victoria, BC and east as St. John’s, NF. “All we need are a few more up North” to make Travel Counsellors Canada truly representative of the country, said Sinclair. Japan National Tourist Office announces winners of JTS Online Certification Program
The Japan National Tourist Office has announced the winners of its JTS Online Certification Program for the months of October and December 2008. In October, the grand prize winner of round trip air tickets from Air Canada was Sara Vostaie from Trafalgar Tours. Other winners in October who won special prizes were Richard Morissette from HRG North America and Jessica Xia Chu from GLP Worldwide Expedition Travel & Tours. The December grand prize winner of round trip air tickets from Japan Airlines was Jacqueline Hau from Jade Travel.
