Board of Directors pays out $53,646.19 for airline, travel agency closures including Zoom, Aloha Airlines and more
On January 27, 2009, TICO’s Board of Directors approved payment of $53,646.19 assisting 49 consumers who did not receive the travel services for which they had paid. These payments were due to the closure of Aero Canadian Tour & Travel in Scarborough ($1,379.95); Aloha Airlines in Honolulu ($230.84); Lifedream Travel & Tours in Toronto ($36,396.50); Nugget Travel and Tours in Scarborough ($6,900.00); Macsha Travels and Tours in Mississauga ($1,400.00) and Zoom Airlines in Ottawa ($7,338.90). The Board also denied four claims. One claim was denied on the basis that it was received beyond the legislated six month filing deadline. One claim was denied on the basis that it contained insufficient documentation to prove the claim and two were denied on the basis that there were no travel services paid for and not provided and the customer was claiming for the cost of replacement services that were received.

Scandinavian airline group SAS AB says its losses widened in the fourth quarter and that it plans to slash 3,000 jobs as part of a new savings plan. The struggling company is also seeking 6 billion kronor (US$720 million) in a rights issue. Stockholm-based SAS posted a 2.8 billion kronor net loss in the quarter, compared to a loss of 596 million kronor in the same period in 2007. The figure includes discontinued operations. U.S. attractions offering steep discounts and freeze gate prices to travellers due to slowing economy Canadian Press
Hoping the prospect of sales will woo cash-strapped travellers, U.S. tourist destinations are taking a page from the retail playbook, offering tourists deep discounts and freezing gate prices. They include free nights at Walt Disney World in Florida, coupons worth $15 off at Pennsylvania's Hershey Park and admission to the Georgia Aquarium, the world's largest fish tank, all at last year's prices. “Given so many people have lost their jobs and aren't getting raises and aren't getting bonuses, it did not seem appropriate to do a price increase this year,” said Dave Santucci, spokesman for the aquarium in downtown Atlanta.
