QANTAS SLASHES PROFIT FORECAST
Qantas announces profit forecast slash and 5% cut to workforce
Canadian Press

Qantas Airways slashed its annual profit forecast Tuesday and will cut up to five per cent of its workforce as the carrier grounds some aircraft in the face of a slump in business and first-class travel. The Australian national airline dropped its full year pretax profit outlook to between 100 million and 200 million Australian dollars ($73US million and $146 million), from its previous forecast of $500AU million. Chief executive Alan Joyce said Qantas, which employs more than 34,000 people, would remove 500 management positions in the latest round of cost cutting. On top of the management layoffs, “up to 1,250 equivalent full-time positions” will also be affected, he said. [Full text and pictures]

OBAMA EASES CUBA RESTRICTIONS
U.S. President Barack Obama will allow Cuban-Americans to travel, send money to homeland; trade embargo still in place
The Associated Press reports that U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration lifted restrictions Monday on Cuban-Americans who want to travel and send money to their island homeland. In a further gesture of openness, U.S. telecommunications firms were freed to seek business there, too. But the broader U.S. trade embargo remained in place. The White House portrayed its changes, which fulfilled one of President Barack Obama's campaign promises, as a path to promoting personal freedom in one of the few remaining communist nations. They also marked another major step away from the foreign policy priorities of the Bush administration. [Full text and pictures]

QATAR & IATA'S GREEN TEAM
Qatar Airways and IATA team up for global initiative carbon offset plan
Qatar Airways has signed an agreement with IATA to spearhead a global carbon offset trading proposal designed to help fund global environmental projects. Under the program, when your client books their tickets, they can choose to pay a little extra to offset the carbon footprint for the particular flight being taken, with proceeds going towards international programs recognized by non-government organizations. The IATA system calculates the carbon footprint for different flight sectors and passengers are able to select which of the programs to support with the extra they contribute. AA ADDS NEW JET
Canadian Press
American Airlines will add the first of 76 new Boeing jets to its fleet this week in a move that the carrier hopes will cut fuel and maintenance costs. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft will replace about one-fourth of American's current aging fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series jets, which have been the subject of several maintenance problems in the past year. The planes are the newest generation of Boeing's workhorse 737 series. American already has 77 Boeing 737-800s it bought nearly a decade ago. They list for US$72.5 million to $81 million.
