IKE PASSING THROUGH CUBA Canadian Press Hurricane Ike roared south of Cuba's densely populated capital and its fragile historic buildings Tuesday as the powerful storm continued to rip its way along the length of the Caribbean's largest island. At least four storm-related deaths have been reported in Cuba despite the evacuation of 1.2 million people to government shelters and other safe areas. Meanwhile, Texas and northern Mexico braced for Ike's next wallop as the storm was poised to move out into the Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday evening where it was expected to regain much of the strength it lost over Cuba. |

| FLIGHT RIGHTS CANADA A 'FARCE'? |
|
N.L. Liberal MP says Tory airline passenger rights plan toothless Canadian Press
The Newfoundland Liberal MP who launched the debate over a bill of rights for airline passengers is calling the federal government's response a farce. Gerry Byrne says the Conservative plan does not include any legal force nor is it binding on the airlines to maintain specific, nationwide standards of customer service. Byrne says the Tory initiative, called Flight Rights Canada, merely makes suggestions it hopes the airline industry will follow. He calls it a pamphlet full of well-crafted, politically appealing language that lacks teeth and offers only hollow platitudes.
