VIRGIN WANTS GATWICK
Canadian Press
Virgin Atlantic Airways, the privately owned British airline controlled by billionaire Richard Branson, said Tuesday it would be interested in bidding for London's Gatwick Airport as part of a consortium. Gatwick could be up for sale next year after Britain's competition watchdog said that it may force airports operator BAA to sell 3 of its 7 airports around the country - including two in London - following fierce criticism of the company for poor customer service, overcrowding and long delays.

Vittorio Lo Tauro
Yesterday afternoon TRAVELHotNews met with Vittorio Lo Tauro, President of the Canadian Travel Council Promoting Italy (CTCPI) and Arts & Leisure Tours/Travel With Flair to discuss their new product highlights and company focus for 2008-2009. Currently CTCPI and its six members: Arts and Leisure Tours/Travel with Flair, Insight Vacations, Kompas Express, Contiki Holidays, the Globus Family of Brands and ALBATours/Sunquest, have been focusing on highlighting some of the regions of Italy that are typically only discovered by repeat clientele to the country. According to Lo Tauro Italy has competition in Europe from Spain, Croatia and Czechoslovakia, and CTCPI has to keep the country (Italy) in the forefront of people’s minds. To do this Lo Tauro mentions that it is important that people talk to experts and truly know Italy. [Full text and pictures]

GLOBAL AIRLINES TO LOSE $5.2B THIS YEAR
Canadian Press
An international air transport association says soaring fuel costs will cause the world's airlines to lose US$5.2 billion in 2008, reversing a $5.6-billion profit in 2007. North American carriers are expected to suffer the most, accounting for US$5 billion of the total, says the International Air Transport Association. Asia Pacific profits will be cut to US$300 million, one-third of their 2007 total. IATA director general Giovanni Bisignani calls the situation ``bleak'' as high oil prices and falling demand hurt the industry's profitability. Airline passenger traffic in July fell 1.9 per cent compared to 2007, the lowest level in five years.
