| Prime Minister Tillman Thomas; Minsiter of Foreign Affairs/Tourism, Peter David | | Grenada's new Prime Minister, the Honourable Tillman Thomas and his Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, the Honourable Peter David, hosted a press conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in downtown Toronto on Saturday afternoon. Thomas won the election in July of this year and it was his first visit to Canada as the leader of his country; last year, he came as the leader of the opposition. David discussed Grenada's outlook on tourism and how it will develop in the near future. Regarding Canada, David acknowledged that its tourism potential as a market for Grenada has not been fully maximized; he said more discussions with Canadian tour operators will hopefully change that. Canada is a good source for winter tourists and Grenada's climate is an easy sell to Canadians if there is available airlift.

| TOURIST SPENDING IN CANADA IS UP |
|
Tourist spending in Canada up 0.9 per cent in Q2, boosted by domestic travel Canadian Press
Statistics Canada says tourism spending rose 0.9 per cent in the second quarter of the year, with travelling Canadians outspending foreign visitors. The agency says tourist spending has risen in every quarter since mid-2003, with domestic demand as the driving force. Canadians spent 1.2 per cent more on touring in Canada in April, May and June, while international visitor spending declined. Although Canadians spent more on travelling, the growth rate was the lowest since the fall of 2006, as a weak economy, slower growth in disposable income and high gasoline prices took a toll. Spending by Canadians abroad was up slightly. The number of jobs attributable to tourism edged up 0.2 per cent in the second quarter, as job gains in the food and beverage services industry offset losses in the accommodation segment.
