STERLING AIRLINES GROUNDED
Denmark-based, Icelandic-owned low-cost airline declares bankruptcy, strands hundreds of passengers at Gatwick
Charmaine Pang
Another low-cost budget airline has declared bankruptcy today in the wake of the credit crunch and high fuel prices. Denmark-based, Icelandic-owned Sterling Airlines released a statement saying that over the last few weeks, the organization had been “fighting a battle to keep the company alive. Sadly, this has not had a positive outcome, and we have therefore decided to file for bankruptcy which will be done later today.” The Daily Mail reported that two flights to Billund, Denmark, three flights to Copenhagen and one flight to Stockholm, Sweden, were cancelled from London Gatwick Airport. This affects about 500 to 700 passengers. [Full text and pictures]

TICO'S MICHAEL PEPPER MAKES IT CLEAR
TICO’s Michael Pepper comments on THN.com interview with Colin Hunter, Oct. 23, says TICO is “not in a position to disclose information regarding the profitability of any registrant”
Last week, TRAVELHotNews.com published an article, ‘Colin Hunter Speaks Out’, featuring Hunter’s take on the state of the travel industry and the stability of his company, Sunwing Vacations. In the article, Hunter commented that, “In [Ontario] Michael Pepper [of TICO] has been very happy to talk to agents and tell them that Sunwing is extremely profitable. So although we are a private company, our books are still open, as they have to be under legislation in QC in ON and in BC and the registrars in these provinces have come in here and looked at our books.” TICO’s Michael Pepper contacted TRAVELHotNews.com regarding Hunter’s comments; Pepper’s statement read: "The statement from Mr. Hunter is somewhat misleading.  TICO regulates the province of Ontario's travel agencies and travel wholesalers and Sunwing is registered with TICO in both capacities. TICO is not in a position to disclose information regarding the profitability of any registrant."  Continue reading for the full statement from Pepper. [Full text and pictures]
