OMAR LEAVES OIL SPILLS BEHIND
Canadian Press
Authorities in St. Croix rushed to contain oil spills on Friday after more than 40 boats sank or washed ashore during hurricane Omar. About half the vessels lost their anchors. The other half were tied at local marinas but broke loose, said Carlos Fachette, enforcement director for the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. All St. Croix beaches have been deemed unsafe because of high pollution levels, and the Schooner Channel area of the Christiansted Harbor remained closed.

Canadian Press

Air Transat plans to reduce surcharges on some routes and Air Canada is expected to follow suit. The Montreal-based charter carrier will reduce surcharges to several destinations in France, including Lyon, by nearly 17 per cent as of Nov. 1, to $290 from $348 for a return fare. Reductions are also planned for next spring for flights to Germany and the Netherlands. [Full text and pictures]
