Summer-quarter profit descended 28 per cent for WestJet, buffeted by "higher fuel costs and the beginning of a more challenging environment for demand.'' Canada's second-largest airline said Monday it earned $54.7 million or 42 cents per share in the third quarter, down from a year-ago profit of $76.1 million, 58 cents per share. Revenue increased 18.5 per cent, to $718.4 million from $606.2 million.

Jim Berra appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Carnival Cruise Lines
Jim Berra, a highly accomplished marketing professional with proven expertise in the areas of customer marketing, brand development and digital, has been named senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines, the world’s largest cruise operator.  In this newly created position, Berra will oversee all of the company’s advertising programs, marketing communications and public relations  He will also oversee all digital efforts, including the audience and site development for Carnival.com. Berra, 37, will join Carnival on Nov. 10 and will report to Ruben Rodriguez, the company’s executive vice president of marketing and guest experience. [Full text and pictures]

CAYMAN ISLANDS – ALL CLEAR
Hurricane Paloma passes; Grand Cayman open for business; Little Cayman, Cayman Brac ‘all clear’

As Hurricane Paloma passed the Cayman Islands over the weekend, the ‘All Clear’ for the Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman was issued. In the wake of Paloma, Grand Cayman returns to business as usual. Owen Roberts International Airport re-opened for business on November 8, for all inbound and outbound flights. All travellers are urged to confirm their reservations with their airlines and accommodations prior to arrival. Hotels on the island are currently accepting reservations and new guests.  Initial assessment efforts currently underway in Cayman Brac indicate that the Gerrard Smith Airport is still undergoing cleanup; it is not yet operational. SINGAPORE AIRLINES REDUCES FUEL SURCHARGE
Fuel surcharges lowered for Business, Economy Class across all routes as of Fri. Nov. 7, 2008
Singapore Airlines lowered its fuel surcharges for travellers in Business and Economy Class, across all routes, for tickets issued on or after Friday 7 November 2008. The reduction is the second time since September 2008 that Singapore Airlines has reduced fuel surcharges, in line with the recent sustained fall in the price of jet fuel. Besides the length of the journey, the surcharge levels will hereafter also take into account the class of travel. Here is the list of revised fuel surcharges: Routes from Singapore-Southeast Asia previously (pre-Nov.7) cost $36USD for all classes; this has been revised to $36 for First Class, $32 for Business Class and $28 for Economy Class.
