| SOUTHWEST FLEW FLAWED PLANES |
|
Regulators seeking millions in penalties against Southwest Airlines
Canadian Press U.S. federal regulators said Thursday they will seek a civil penalty of US$10.2 million - the largest ever - against Southwest Airlines Co. for failing to inspect older planes for cracks and then flying them before inspections were done. The FAA said Southwest operated nearly 60,000 flights in 2006 and 2007 using 46 planes that had missed inspections for possible fatigue-related cracking on the fuselage areas. The airline flew another 1,451 flights with the same planes in March 2007, even after discovering that it had failed to conduct the required inspections, the FAA charged. All but $200,000 of the proposed penalty dealt with those later flights.

AIRPORTS GETTING READY FOR MARCH BREAK Canadian Press Canadian airports are bracing for an influx of travellers preparing to head to warmer climates for the March Break holiday. Pearson International Airport in Toronto says more than 100,000 passengers are expected today, a 14 per cent increase over a typical day. The country's busiest airport is expecting almost as many travellers on Sunday, March 16, at the end of the March Break period. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority is asking passengers to heed the restrictions on liquids, gels and aerosols when packing carry-on bags. They must be containers no larger than 100-millilitres and be sealed in clear plastic resealable bags. The GTAA says it collects more than 600,000 banned items from travellers at Pearson each week. |

SOUTH AND EASTERN ONTARIO BRACE FOR STORM Canadian Press While some Ontario residents prepare for a March break getaway, those left behind would be happy with a break from March weather. Environment Canada says another major storm brewing in the southern U.S. will bring significant snowfall to Ontario in two stages. The first stage will begin this afternoon in southwestern Ontario and move into eastern regions by the evening. After a brief reprieve overnight, the heaviest snowfall is expected to begin Saturday afternoon and not let up for several hours. Environment Canada meteorologist Itch Merideth says the heaviest snow is expected in eastern areas and along the Niagara peninsula. He says snowfall amounts will be ``somewhere in the 20-30 centimetre range for Toronto'' and area. But as you go east, says Merideth, ``upwards of 30-50 centimetres is possible.'' |
