| GOT BAGGAGE? LHR’S T5 TROUBLES |
|
Baggage handling troubles persist at Heathrow's Terminal 5; 20 pre cent of flights cancelled Canadian Press
Looks great, doesn't work very well. That's the verdict on Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 building, with embarrassed British Airways officials now saying flight cancellations may extend into Saturday. BA is the sole occupant of the mammoth new terminal, which had been praised as a solution to Heathrow's chronic congestion. But it has been hit with severe baggage handling problems since the new terminal opened Thursday morning, leading to long lines of angry, stranded passengers. Airline officials were forced to cancel 68 out of 380 flights in and out of the terminal Thursday and to restrict passengers to hand luggage only. Read on for more.

American, Delta cancel more flights as they inspect aircraft Canadian Press
 |
| American Airlines and Delta planes will be grounded as the companies inspect planes | | Airlines and Delta Air Lines cancelled hundreds more flights Thursday as they continued inspections of wiring bundles on some of their planes. Although thousands of passengers were inconvenienced over the past two days, analysts played down any notion that the cancellations would hurt the airlines financially. Delta expected to cancel about 275 flights, or about three per cent of its schedule, before returning to normal operations early Friday, said spokeswoman Chris Kelly. American, the largest U.S. airline, cancelled 141 flights by mid-afternoon Thursday, or about six per cent of its estimated 2,300 flights, officials said. The Fort Worth-based airline cancelled 318 flights Wednesday. Read on for more details.

EASTER ISLAND: AN EAR FOR AN EAR Canadian Press An ear for an ear? The angry mayor of Easter Island says he wishes the Finnish tourist accused of chipping an earlobe off an ancient statue could have his own ear clipped off as ``justice.'' The 26-year-old Finnish tourist has issued a public apology through a Chilean newspaper. He says he regrets the incident that has caused an uproar on the South Pacific island, a Chilean territory. Authorities accuse him of breaking the ear off one of the world-famous statues on Sunday and trying to take a piece of it as a souvenir. |

JETBLUE FOUNDER TO LAUNCH BRAZILIAN AIRLINE Canadian Press The founder of JetBlue Airways announced plans Thursday for a new Brazilian airline that would begin operating next year with three jets and eventually grow to a fleet of 76 planes flying nationwide. JetBlue chairman David Neeleman said the opportunity is clear: Latin America's largest country has a growing passenger travel market dominated by two airlines that face little domestic competition and charge high fares. "The prices that people pay here in Brazil are 50 per cent higher than the prices people pay in the United States,'' he said. "Brazil is a country that needs more competition and a different kind of competition.'' |
