UNITED, US AIR SAY NO TO DEAL - FOR NOW

The CEOs of United Airlines and US Airways formally shelved their effort to create the world's largest airline, backing away from a deal that could have shored up their finances but also would have resulted in fewer routes and higher ticket prices for consumers. The two chief executives confirmed the talks had been suspended in messages to their employees on Friday.

LATIN AMERICAN WORKSHOP

Yesterday evening at the BW Primrose Hotel, L.A.T.A. hosted a Latin American workshop in Toronto. The workshop was previously held in Vancouver and then Montreal.  Suppliers visiting from Argentina, Belize, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala and Peru educated local tour operators and agents. Suppliers from local airlines, hotel chains, destination management companies and tourist boards were on hand to discuss what their destination or product has to offer Canadians, as well as clear up some misconceptions about the region. AIR TRANSAT LAUNCHES BASEL-MULHOUSE FLIGHT
Direct flights begin from Toronto, Montreal; 60+ direct flights to Europe this summer

Yesterday, Air Transat launched its new Toronto/Montreal/Basel-Mulhouse flight, one of over 60 direct flights being offered from Canada to Europe this summer. The Basel-Mulhouse flights are scheduled to leave every Thursday from Toronto and Montreal from May 29-October 9, 2008.  Since the Basel-Mulhouse Airport is located on both the Swiss and French (Alsace) borders, tourists will be able to visit two countries on the same trip. Transat Holidays offers a variety of vacation options to better explore the region, such as the ‘Beauties of Alsace and Bourgogne’, ‘Floral cities and towns of Alsace’ and ‘Splendours of the Rhine’  tours and packages.  The tour operator also offers self-drive tours that include flight, accommodation, breakfast and car rental, with itineraries that allow your clients to see the best of the region. Trafalgar’s eLearning program has experienced success with agents. More than 6,700 travel professionals have participated in the Level 1 series – a four-module program - since its April 2006 introduction. Trafalgar is currently launching Level 2, comprised of four modules. As with Level 1, each agent who successfully completes the training will receive a Trafalgar Specialist certificate. This unique, in-depth style of product training utilizes flash animation and a highly interactive “game-style” format to educate and entertain participants. ACTA ID CARD ADDS NEW PARTNERS
Air Canada expands partnership; Gray Line joins
The Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) is welcoming a new travel industry partner and has announced additional benefits for their ID Card Program. Air Canada, which already recognizes the card for domestic travel, now also offers ACTA cardholders, who are working in an IATA accredited agencies, two reduced rate AD75 authorization numbers entitling them to a 75 per cent reduction on applicable fares when travelling with Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz, Central Mountain Air, Air Alliance/Air Georgian.  Gray Line is joining the program with an offer of a 10 per cent commission on all products booked on grayline.com to holders of the ACTA identification card. Last week, TRAVELHotNews asked our readers about Icelandair’s new service from Toronto and Halifax, newly launched. Most readers – 44 per cent – said their clients lived “too far” from YYZ/YHZ for the new service to be an impact. Twenty-six per cent of readers said that Iceland “isn’t the type of package or destination I sell”. Another 19 per cent of readers said their clients were “definitely booking”, while 11 per cent of readers said “A lot of my clients are asking, but no bookings yet”.
AEROPLAN TO LAUNCH NEW MAGAZINE

Aeroplan Income Fund is launching a new magazine, Aeroplan Arrival, focused on travel, lifestyle, culture and Aeroplan reward merchandise. The magazine is to be published three times a year in French and English, with "direct and targeted access to 500,000 of Aeroplan's high-value members,'' the loyalty program operator said Thursday.
