Yesterday evening Oded Grofman, Consul and Director for Canada, Israel Government Tourist Office (IGTO), invited Canadian media and travel trade colleagues to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel at Toronto’s Park Hyatt Hotel. Israel will also be holding similar cocktail receptions in New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Primarily, the evening was to celebrate the State of Israel 60th anniversary, but it was also an opportunity for Israel to thank the media and trade for helping Israel reach their goal of half a million Canadian tourists within the past 10 years. Last year more than 60,000 Canadians travelled to Israel, setting another record number for visitation. In the first quarter of 2008, Israel received a 33 per cent increase in the number of Canadian visitors. [Full text and pictures]


NEW MANAGER FOR ST. VINCENT & GRENADINES
Shelley John is new Manager and Sales Representative in Toronto office
Shelley John has joined the Toronto office of St. Vincent & Grenadines
The Ministry of Tourism has named Shelley John its Manager and Sales Representative for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, based in the Toronto Tourism Office.  A native of St. Vincent, John assumed the post on April 15.  John brings a decade of relevant experience in the hospitality and real estate industries to her new post.  “St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a throwback to the Caribbean before mass tourism – the ideal destination for culture mavens and outdoor enthusiasts who are looking for an off-the-beaten-path vacation,” says John.  “I can assure Canadians that the Caribbean they’re looking for awaits them in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, lush and green, blessed with pristine waters, an underwater world teeming with life, with several private islands and exclusive resorts.” [Full text and pictures]


MARY NGUYEN TO DEPART CAYMAN ISLANDS TOURIST BOARD
Vacates her position as of May 28; will head to Baxter Travel Media
Mary Nguyen
Mary Nguyen, Sales & Marketing Officer for the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, will be vacating her position as of May 28, 2008. Nguyen told TRAVELHotNews.com that she will be headed to Baxter Travel Media as a staff writer for Canadian Travel Press and Travel Courier. No replacement has been announced for her position. TICO BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION
One position on TICO Board will be chosen; results revealed at TICO AGM, June 24, 2008
Toronto – The Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) has sent out ballots to all registrants this week for the election of one position on the TICO Board of Directors.  Recently, TICO sent out Nomination Forms to all registrants and the eligible candidates on the ballot are:
Retail Candidates - (3 year position)
Monique Cloutier, Universal Gateway Travel Agency, Wahnapitae; Carole Cooper, Flight Centre, Toronto; Gregory Luciani, Travelonly Inc., Brantford; David Shaw, Evans INTRAVEL Inc., Orillia. All ballots must be received at the offices of McGovern, Hurley, Cunningham by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on June 13, 2008. The results of the election will be announced at TICO’s 11th Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on June 24th 2008 at the Toronto Congress Centre.  Read on for full details. SIA LAUNCHES ALL-BUSINESS CLASS SERVICE
Singapore Airlines launched its all-Business Class service to New York (Newark) on May 15th. The newly reconfigured Airbus A340-500 is fitted with 100 Business Class seats, making Singapore Airlines the first to operate an all-Business Class service on a transpacific flight. The all business class service currently operates 3x/week, with daily service to New York by the end of June. By late Sep 2008, SIA will also fly the all-Business Class service to Los Angeles daily.
AEROPLAN CHANGES NAME
Canadian Press
Aeroplan Income Fund plans to change its name to Groupe Aeroplan Inc. as part of its proposed conversion from an income trust into a public corporation. The loyalty points operator said Friday the name change is included in the information circular mailed to unitholders ahead of their vote June 19 on the restructuring. The restructuring, would change Aeroplan into ``a growth-oriented, dividend-paying global loyalty management public corporation.''
