AC SNEAKS IN FUEL SURCHARGES
Air Canada fails transparency test in adopting fuel surcharges, observers say
Canadian Press
Industry observers say Air Canada has not been transparent enough in informing public about new fuel surcharges. Unlike rival carrier WestJet, Canada's largest airline has made little mention of the reintroduction of a substantial increased cost of flying. The primary reference is located in hyperlink on its website once consumers establish the final cost of their travel. Calgary-based WestJet, by contrast, has informed consumers about the surcharges in newspaper advertising and on the main page of its website. Airline industry observer Joseph D'Cruz of the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management says Air Canada has hurt its public image by not adopting sufficient transparency in adopting fuel surcharges. AA CUTS DOMESTIC CAPACITY
Canadian Press
American Airlines says it will cut domestic capacity by 11 per cent to 12 per cent in the fourth quarter as it grapples with record-high fuel prices. American had previously expected fourth-quarter capacity to fall 4.6 per cent from the same period in 2007. The airline's parent company AMR Corp. said Wednesday it also expects to retire 45 to 50 planes from its fleet, most of them gas-guzzling MD-80 aircraft. Those were the planes grounded for faulty wiring last month.
HELLO KITTY NAMED JAPAN TOURISM AMBASSADOR
Japan's tourism ministry on Monday named Hello Kitty as its choice to represent the country in China and Hong Kong, two places where she is wildly popular among children and young women. Officials hope tapping into that fan base will lead to a bigger flow of tourists into Japan and push the country closer to the goal of attracting 10 million overseas visitors every year under the "Visit Japan" campaign.
