Yesterday’s agenda included a review of member activity and a panel discussion on Internet booking versus travel agent booking. Some questions up for discussion included the role of the travel agent as either dinosaur or secret weapon, how to cope with travellers that know more than an agent and what demographic is using either medium. Carnival Cruise Lines has recognized six of its outside sales professionals for providing superior service to travel agents during the past year. One of them is Canada's own Lynne St. Jean. She is a Quebec-based BDM for the company, and St. Jean was one of the names singled out for recognition this year. Ann Sedgwick, Carnival’s business development director (BDD) for Missouri, received the “BDD of the Year” designation for the second time in three years.

Jamaica Tourist Board seminars in Northern Ontario from June 17-19, 2008
Travel professionals in Northern Ontario will soon be “feeling all right”, as the Jamaica Tourist Board continues its series of “Discover Jamaica” seminars, into the 705 area code. The seminars run in Sault Ste. Marie (June 17), Sudbury (June 18), and North Bay (June 19). These upcoming dinner seminars will update retailers on the improvements in the destination’s infrastructure, including newly renovated properties and attractions. Jamaica invites everyone to come out and share an evening with your destination representatives, and learn about some of the new and exciting developments taking place on the island. An appeal of ruling in favour of severely disabled Canadian passengers requiring an additional seat on airlines because they need medical assistance or are obese will not be heard by the Federal Court of Appeal. The court turned down a request by Air Canada and West Jet to hear an appeal of a Canadian Transportation Agency ruling in January that requires them to offer a free seat to obese passengers who need one, or an attendant accompanying a disabled passenger. The ruling leaves the airlines 12 months to draft regulations on accommodating qualified disabled passengers. ``We're thrilled,'' said Laurie Beachell, national co-ordinator of the Council of Canadians with Disabilities. ``I think this may be a first for air travel.''
