Yesterday evening The Italian Government Tourist Board and The Canadian Travel Council Promoting Italy (CTCPI) hosted an Italian workshop at Toronto’s Columbus Centre with their members Contiki, Insight, Globus, Alba Tours, Kompas Express and Arts and Leisure Tours / Travel With Flair. The event gave tour operators, travel agents and media a chance to meet one-on-one with travel specialists from all CTCPI members and look over new products being offered for 2009 and 2009. Vittorio Lo Tauro, one of the founding members for CTCPI and Sales and Marketing for Arts and Leisure Tours / Travel With Flair, opened the evening by thanking all members and told the crowd that all CTCPI members offer a wide spectrum of travel styles from escorted tours to great accommodations. Yesterday evening marked the launch of CubaPLUS, a new quarterly Canadian magazine which celebrates the culture and achievements of Cubans. The media, tour operators, travel agents and other cultural and tourism partners were present for the launch. Tourism and government officials were present, including the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Ernesto Senti; the Cuban Consul General, Laureano Cardoso, and the Cuban Commercial Attache to Canada, Alfredo Pi.  Representatives from the Cuba Tourist Board were also on hand to celebrate the launch, including the Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Toronto, Elias Bestard, the Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Montreal, Rosa Adela Mejias Jimenez, and Marketing Assistant Nieves Ricardo from the Toronto office. TICO AGM GETS OUT OF ‘HAND’
One Step Travel’s demise causes $1M+ payout from Compensation Fund; Handa Travel alleges that more could have been done sooner
A public enquiry will soon take place
This week, the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) held their 11th Annual General Meeting, where members voted and approved a call for a public enquiry into TICO’s treatment of One Step Travel, an agency that is no more. CSTAR issued a press release this morning recounting the details from this year’s AGM. Payouts were made in excess of $1M (CAD) from Ontario’s Travel Industry Compensation Fund, managed by TICO, to those affected by the closing of One Step Travel. The press release notes that One Step Travel’s business was “first characterized by officials as a voluntary business termination, then a failure, then a fraud”. TICO registrant Handa Travel alleges to have provided TICO with evidence over a number of years attesting to the financial and regulatory problems at One Step Travel. Read on for full details. At its initial meeting following TICO’s Annual General Meeting held at the Toronto Congress Centre on June 24, 2008, TICO’s new Board of Directors named Jill Wykes, Senior Vice President, Thomas Cook Canada as TICO Board Chair.   Mike Foster, President, Uniglobe Instant Travel was named Vice Chair of the Board of Directors.  Jill Wykes is one of CATO’s three representatives on the Board and Mike Foster is one of ACTA’s three representatives on the TICO Board of Directors. These appointments are for a term of one year duration until TICO’s next Annual General Meeting in June 2009. [Full text and pictures]


VARAPLAYA RAISES TAX PRICES/FUEL SURCHARGE
Varaplaya Tours has just announced a slight increase in tax prices, effective July 1, 2008. From YUL the new amount will be 292.00$ instead of 272.00$ and from YYZ the new amount will be $270.85 instead of $250.85.
